Jaguars OTAs news and notes

Monday OTA practice news and notes:

Quote:*Add defensive tackle Abry Jones (sprained knee) to the injury report.

*Not practicing were the same seven receivers who missed all or parts of last week: Cecil Shorts (calf), Marqise Lee (ankle), Allen Robinson (hamstring), Ace Sanders (thigh), Tandon Doss (calf), Lamaar Thomas (knee) and Mike Brown (groin).

*Linebacker Dekoda Watson (groin) continues to be a spectator – he has missed every OTA. Coach Gus Bradley said the team isn’t concerned about the newcomer falling behind, instead saying it’s a chance for LaRoy Reynolds to get valuable first-team reps.

“Mentally, he’s picking up on what we’re asking of him,” Bradley said of Watson. “We think highly of Dekkoda and we liked what he did on tape [last year for Tampa Bay] and we know he’s going to make us even stronger.”

*Safety Josh Evans (foot) made his first appearance, taking part in stretching before doing side-field work.

*Bradley had praise for rookie tight end Marcel Jensen, who missed the first part of OTAs following sports hernia surgery.

“We had him in the Senior Bowl although he didn’t play much because of the injury, but his size [was intriguing] and we knew he had the athleticism to be able to catch the ball,” Bradley said.

*Before practice, the Jaguars waived offensive tackle DeMarcus Love and signed rookie receiver Kevin Wimberly.

Wimberly and Kevin Smith, a receiver claimed off waivers from Arizona last Thursday, went through their first practices with the Jaguars.

Wimberly, 25, participated in the Jaguars’ rookie mini-camp last month as a tryout player. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Wimberly had 97 catches for 989 yards and eight touchdowns for the Wolf Pack last year, where he played for coach Brian Polian, whose brother, Chris, works in the Jaguars’ front office.

<p class="">Gus says Henne, Shorts and Branch stand out among players who've been most consistent.

The curious thing is the Branch inclusion. Can you really tell much in shorts & shells regarding the DL?

When is the next practice open to the public??  I remember seeing June 19th for the veteran's mini camp, but can't seem to find anything now??

Gus says yes.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I believe that is correct.  They'll probably start promoting it later this week.  I know there was at least one more practice that was going to be open to the public after the success with the rookie camp and the OTA session.

That's not a veteran mini-camp, BTW.  It's a mandatory mini-camp for all players that runs 6/17-6/19.

M Brown, A Sanders and J Evans all began easing back in to practice yesterday - doing drills off to the side with helmets. (per oehser)

I heard on the radio yesterday that if this were a game week, most of those WRs would be on the field. The team is taking the cautious approach with these smaller nagging injuries. They are being sensible by letting these minor issues completely heal so they don't become a season long problem. They are just doing the smart thing with these guys. After all, it is just OTAs.

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

I think you can tell some things, but other guys will stand out when the pads go on.

Even at the open OTA last week, you could tell that in a game situation, most of these guys would get on the field.  It really is about protecting their guys during practices that aren't worth the risk of further injury.  Let them heal up and get healthy for training camp.

You can tell some things, but we've heard about standouts at DE in these practices and even in training camp.  When the games start, many disappear.  I don't expect that with Branch, but we've had more than a few OTA/Camp studs over the years who didn't pan out.

IIRC that was the case with guys in the past like Austen Lane

I'd agree that I don't expect the that with Branch, either. I think Branch's progression/ production curve is legit.

It wasn't just Lane.  James Wyche was a world beater in training camp.  We've had quite a few guys who blew it up when the contat was limited or non-existent, but did nothing when the lights were on.

Exactly.  Camp wonders are limitless.  Unfortunately, they never panned out when the pads went on.

Yeah, there's an endless list of camp wonders at WR who did all the circus catches in camp and OTAs, but couldn't get on the field.
