All things Star Wars

#1

So Star Wars anticipation has completely consumed my life, it's becoming sad and pathetic how excited I am for this new trilogy. That said we need a dedicated thread for Star Wars updates and thoughts. They just announced JJ is only doing episode VII and they've got Rian Johnson doing VIII possibly IX. I like Looper but wonder why they're changing directors already?

Please powers at be don't ruin Star Wars.

I've never seen a starwars movie (I slept through half of episode 3?, the one where he falls in lava or something).  Am I a bad person?

Aside from episode one I liked the pre trilogy. I don't think they ruined it at all and with this new trilogy I'm excited as ever to see a new story line develop.

I'm just worried they already are switching directors and writers

The first one was so bad it is hard to recover.  The 3rd was the best and still didn't have what the originals had.  The pre-trilogy wasn't good.  Too much focus on CGI and not enough on story and characters.

They could have just done episode 3 and been done with prequel. I didn't mind it and really didn't mind Episode 2 but 1 was horrible except for Maul.

Then they went back and remastered the originals with more CGI. Darn near ruined them as well.

Episodes I through III were just lousy stories. Lucas was looking to cash in, which he did. I'm not sure what to expect from the new trilogy, but I think JJ Abrams is enough of a fan of the franchise that he'll do it justice. Bringing back the original bunch is a nice tip of the hat to the fans.

I had high hopes after what JJ did with Star Trek but I'm concerned why isn't he sticking around for VIII and IX

I could live with the CGI it was the casting of young Anakin that killed it for me. I liked Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, especially the end of Revenge of the Sith and the transformation into Vader.

It should have started with Anakin around 18 years old. I do agree there was excessive CGI use.  I don't care about lens flares....doesn't bother me that much.

Just read that Harrison Ford being out 6 months might make them push the movie back. I guess he's the main character in the new movie, I'm not sure I like that. I was hoping to focus on a younger cast and using the older cast as a passing of the torch sort of deal.

They lost everything to me that was great about star wars. It felt soulless.

The prequels should not be even considered part of star wars canon.

The fact that Lucas couldn't even write the prequels without contradiction of the original just destroyed it for me...

Ben to Luke: when I met your father he was already a great pilot...

Really?? He was a pod racer, that's a great pilot?? Make the world a better place punch George Lucas in the face.

With that said, has any one read the Heir to the Empire trilogy? I read it way back in the day. Really great books, I highly recommend them!

In Episode one he was piloting the pod racers and winning the events, that made him a pretty good pilot. I don't see the contradiction there? There's plenty to not like about Episode one but I'm missing your point there.

I personally like that they are bringing back some of the older actors to pass the torch.  I think it will help the first movie kick off the others.

Opening weekend of #1 coincided with my introduction to fungi.  I had no clue what was going on in the film, but the visuals and aurals were amazing.

Agreed.  I think it was a wise decision to hook in the die hards by having as much of the original cast as possible in place for the first movie.

I hear ya, but I pretty much grew up watching Star Wars...  When Old Ben was talking to Luke about his father in Ep. IV, the implication regarding Obi Wan and Anakin's relationship was that he was a great pilot in regards to the fight against the empire.  It's always been a splinter in my mind the fact that George Lucas decided that a great pilot meant in Pod Races rather than in actually fighting against the fascists of the Old Republic.

Now you can take the conversation in Jedi where Luke began to question Obi-Wan's description of certain event's as "A certain Point of View", but to me, I just cannot reconcile that conversation from Ep. IV....  It's just a non-starter for me.

It's a complete inconsistency regarding how Anakin was depicted in the Original Star Wars versus how Lucas completely sold out to get a new generation to  fall in love with the Star Wars Universe.  If you remember, prior to Lucas going CGI crazy and "remastering" the Original trilogy, when we saw "Ghost Anakin" he was an old man like Obi-Wan.  This, to me, means that Obi-Wan and Anakin were similar in age when they first met.  That's how it was implied in the Original trilogy.

The way Lucas created the whole dynamic between Obi-Wan and Anakin in the prequels just doesn't jive with what was described in the Original.

And don't get me started with Mitochlorians and how that completely destroys Yoda's speech from Empire Strikes Back.  How can the Force surround you, when it's just a bunch of cells that some people have alot of and some people don't.  Lucas basically made the force into a kids book about wishing to be gifted instead of the metaphysical awakening of becoming one with the Universe as Yoda described it.

Han Solo's (and most of the Empires) interpretation of "an old hokey religion" also comes under question if you accept that Mitochlorians are the basis for a Jedi's powers.  The concept creates a quantifiable basis to decide who's in the "Jedi Club" and who's out.  The whole point of the Original Star Wars trilogy was that it had nothing to do with your birth or your genetic makeup, but with your relationship with the Universe that surrounds you in a more  esoteric and philosophical way.
