It must be easier to hang the speakers at ground level as they have removed one of the supports on the south board to presumably hang the speakers then re-install.

Anybody want to wager a over/under on nearby residents complaining about the bright scoreboards being a issue during night games?

Whether someone has a liberal, or conservative viewpoint, a authoritative figure should not lock a thread for the sole purpose to get the last word in all the while prohibiting someone else from being able to respond.

I dont care either, just seeing how some people in town can complain about the smallest things, I would figure N4J would start airing complaints about the scoreboard soon.

That was not a shot at your comment but more my sentiment towards the ones you have correctly pointed out. There will definitely be those who complain and I hope any official response from the city would be for them to go pound sand.

The hate baiting those sites do is incredible.  They don't care about anything as long as people view there crap and comment.

I try my best never to comment to feed the idiots, but sometimes its so hard.

Any story about the scoreboards is going to get:
  • Nice scoreboards but nobody will be there to see them
  • I guess that's one way to get people to go to your games
  • Big scoreboards to watch the team lose
  • Why not spend the money on getting better players
  • Will they be moved to London
  • Instead of hiring police or teachers, we get bigger scoreboards
And each person thinks they are original.

I did see a funny comment the other day asking if the two metal extensions on the top (speaker supports) are rabbit ears.

Yeah, that about covers it.

Occasionally you may see why dont teachers/policeman/firemen get paid as much as a pro athlete. They are more important angle.

The fact that the bed tax is to promote tourism is beyond them....they also seem to forget the Jags/concerts/monster trucks/FL-GA brings the city revenue that goes back into paying for the renovations.  Shahid is right, Jacksonville is too simple minded, and its not just the rich people.

And some people think somehow the bed tax will not be able to fund it because no tourists or business travelers come to Jacksonville.

Lol, seriously.  The Jaguars/Fl-Ga/Gator Bowl alone bring people from all over.

People are so short sighted and uneducated.

So just exactly how much revenue is really generated from that?  Please educate us short sighted and uneducated people.

It's about more than just those 2 events.  If you look at where the bulk of new hotels have sprung up around Jacksonville, there's usually a business element involved.  People come and go from Jacksonville constantly.  Many are business travelers who are here for whatever reason.  The majority of the hotels that are located near one of the high commerce areas downtown, or on the southside are consistently booked almost solid week after week.

There's a reason there are so many new hotels popping up all around the city.  Companies aren't building them hoping people will show up.

The bed tax is a 6% tax added to the cost of hotel rooms, and any apartments, condos, single family homes, or other dwellings that are rented out for less than 6 months at a time.  So, if a family comes down and rents a condo at the beach for a month, they're paying 6% to the city of Jacksonville as part of their fee.  It's a tidy sum that really adds up.

Before someone says we don't get tourists in Jacksonville, in doing some research, tourism had a $2.2 billion economic impact on Jacksonville last year alone, and that income is rising by about 4% a year.  Lodging revenue generated from just hotels in the area was almost $360 million in 2013, and is expected to rise in 2014.  As that traffic has increased, so has the rates charged per room by hotels.  Lodging revenue from hotels increased by more than 5% last year from 2012, and that increase is expected to be even higher for 2014.  There's more than enough revenue being generated by the bed tax to assure any bonds issued for major projects will be repaid without having to have the local taxpayers carry the majority of the burden.

No, I'm not just plucking these numbers out of thin air.  There's a pretty comprehensive report about tourism in Jacksonville that came out a couple of months ago.  Here it is:

The Economic Impact of Tourism in Jacksonville, FL

Interesting...  I'll admit, I haven't read the report that you linked to, but initially I have to question some of the figures.  The $2.2 billion economic impact are taxes that we pull in?  $360 million is probably a pretty accurate figure after running some numbers through my head quickly.  I just can't seem to wrap my head around a $2.2 billion dollar figure.

I'll do my due diligence and read the report that you linked.

Tourism has a $2.2 billion economic impact on the city.  They have all the numbers breaking it down by different categories.  The $360 million is just for hotels in the area. The bed tax revenue generated by the city on that alone is almost $22 million based on the 6% rate.
