Mercedes Lewis says "I don't believe anyone can cover me"

#61

Quote:In the modern NFL a tight end's ability to block is secondary to his ability to make plays as a receiver if you want to win games.

When the best you can say about anyone who isn't playing O-line is "they block well" then you're talking about a position that needs upgrading.
Yeah, cause Mercedes is a terrible TE that can't catch the ball at all and hasn't made any plays the last few years with a [BLEEP] team and QB.

No reason to replace this guy at the moment. Still a huge threat coming into this season if he stays healthy.

Quote:From a completely impartial standpoint Marcedes impact is rather similar to Reggie Williams.

They both have very poor numbers, they both were mostly noted for their "blocking" ability, and now they both have a video in this thread showing some of their best (and most unrepresentative) play.

Lemme guess.  More hyperbole?  Because to make the claim that Lewis' impact is similar to Reggie Williams is probably one of the most idiotic things I've seen posted recently.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Lol ok Oklahomie, the Jaguars didnt need a blocking TE last year.

Blocking is a HUGE part of a TEs job, WAY more than your rediculous comparison to a WRs blocking value.

No, no need for hyperbole. I didn't compare Reggie Williams to Jerry Rice, did I?

They both were guys that were reaches when drafted and neither of whom have a significant impact being in the game.

For all this talk about how 'important' it is to have a receiving TE, take a look at the statistics and see how unimportant it is relative to the team...i.e....the playoffs.

Most of your stud TE are from non-playoff teams. On quick scan on NFL.com I believe 8 of the top 10 were NOT on playoff teams.

Hell, Seattle's best TE was ranked 32.

You don't NEED a stud receiver at TE to be a playoff team.

Marcedes was the 32nd ranked TE last year by yards, he doesn't play for Seattle.

Wow. Thanks for that highly intelligent input. You're a peach.

Sorry I couldn't sit here and scan through since I'm at my desk AT WORK.

Idiot.

And this brilliant revelation that I may have misstated Zach Miller's stats by a spot or two discounts what I said about receiving tight ends not really affecting standings, exactly how?

You're the one that pulls a stat out of your rear, gets called on it, and I'm the idiot?

So out of my post, you determined that was the key point I was making?

Brilliant.

If you're just making something up regarding stats why should I take any of what you have to say seriously?

I want the Jaguars to be great as much as any homer does, but I also recognize areas where the team can improve.

Why is everyone so defensive about impartial appraisals of Marcedes today?

Yes. I really had to 'make up stats' to support the point that you really don't need a stud receiver at tight end. I mean it's extremely important that Zach Miller was 30 and not 32.

Way to focus in on the least important part of the post.

But hey...it's what you do.

How much of that statistic had to do with him, and how much of it had to do with the fact that our offense was pretty bad last year?  How much of that stat can be attributed to the scheme we were running most of the season?  Yeah, stats are fun stuff when you're pushing an agenda.

You're correct in saying you don't need a stud at TE, but it certainly does help.

Also of note, the Jaguars passed the ball about 180 more times than the Seahawks did. I wouldn't expect any of their receivers to have inflated numbers.

Or they need to have something to rip the team over because they fancy themselves to be junior GMs thanks to their wicked skills on Madden.

I know, EIGHT YEARS OF BAD SCHEME AND AGENDA!

You'd think one of these days the guys paid to figure out how to get the best out of the players on the field would be able to get so much more out of him, you know, since the message board KNOWS he's actually pretty awesome.

Jag's OL was in such bad shape last year it resulted in Lewis being mostly relegated to helping the blocking game. You have to look at the situation holistically when evaluating a player and not cherry pick the stats that happen to support a previously decided position.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Or we could just accept that 8 years of stats are enough to establish that he really is just a guy that's pretty good at blocking and not very effective in the passing game.

But in the last 8 years, Lewis has had production as a pass catcher with typically 40+ to 50+ catches a year. His first year and last year were the exceptions.

The problem is, not all 8 years were as bad as you are portraying. But you already now that.
