Actually I've made posts leading up to the draft, directly after the draft when the Vikings got him at 32, and in recent weeks - that I felt he was the best and would be the best QB in this draft.

I think it's very hard to prove anything at this stage, especially when every team is trying to tell the world about the "awesome" player they have drafted.


Yes, he is economical with his movement and he throws with intelligence but to be honest I don't see any difference between these highlight tapes and the ones from his college days. He is a good player and probably underrated in the draft.


But, of course, the hope is that Bortles will (with the right coaching) become a better QB than Bridgewater....

Considering the team he has they should be better.

 

His TD/INT ratio is nothing special, and his best passer rating in a season is an 88.

 

He's doing well, but if he were in Jax I'm thinking he'd probably have a career passer rating peak of around 80 and be throwing 10 less TDs per season.

See I would agree that they got a massive steal, save for the comments made and actions taken (or not taken) by the other thirty one teams. I loved him throughout the evaluation process but I know also that I don't know much.

 

If Belichek thought that Jimmy G in the second was better value than Teddy in the first... If Bruce Arians thought that freaking Logan Thomas in the fourth was a better value than Teddy in the first... And obviously these guys know QBs. I just trust the professionals, ya know?

 

I do think, however, that he went to the perfect situation. He's got a solid O line, the best running back in the game, and a more reliable Percy Harvin with Patterson. Combined with his pro-readiness, and I wouldn't be surprised if they make the playoffs this year. As I said, however... I trust our guys and I think the teams between us have more knowledge than I. I'm very happy with Blake.

 

 

Belichek has Brady.  Jimmy G is a case of more "upside".

Once again, I don't think I know more than the NFL, but from what tape I watched of Jimmy G, he seemed like the very opposite of an upside pick. He has fantastic, polished mechanics and a quick delivery, as well as being an intelligent guy by all accounts. However, his arm strength is subpar, as is his size, athleticism, and level of playbook/competition at the collegiate level. TBH the Jimmy G pick was one of the weirdest in the draft IMO. If they wanted a potential pick they should have grabbed Logan Thomas or Mett. Not Jimmy.

The best QB in this draft class right up to the point where he's getting crushed by a 300+ lb lineman repeatedly.  At that point, he becomes another guy who had so much promise.

Except Tom Brady played for one of the most prestigious programs in the country and had multiple 4th qtr comebacks his senior year. They took him as a value pick in the 6th not expecting him to be there. Plus he has all the physicality of a traditional dropback passer (arm, height, footwork).


Jimmy G is a small school system weak-arm QB they reached on in the 2nd round.


Bill B doesnt exactly have a flawless draft record.

Uhhh I'll preface this by saying I was a kid when Brady was coming out, but there's a massive difference. He came from one of the biggest schools in the country and put his intangibles on display in a big way. Not to mention the fact that he had the raw skillset, such as height and armstrength, that Jimmy doesn't.

 

But like I said before... If you are in a championship window, you have two options in the offseason: try to extend the window, or try to capitalize on the window (aka Super Bowl). If you're going to take a premium pick (2nd round) and use it on an 'extend the window' pick, a replacement for your best player, he'd better have some fantastic physical skills. As I said, I think Logan Thomas would have been a much better potential-based pick, because you can train his mental game to catch up to his amazing physical skills. But picking a guy who is great mentally and asking him to be the heir to Tom Brady without physical tools is a disaster waiting to happen.
