What Was The Point That You Started To Realize That Gene Smith Wasn't A Good Gm?

Quote:Let's be fair to gene smith on trading up for gabbert and mike shannahan willing to trade the pick to this franchise for us to draft him. Let also remember that mike shannahan didn't want to trade up for RGIII as well and he was talked into it by dan Snyder so maybe he isn't the end all be all of judging QB's. Just saying. Mike Shanahan passed on Gabbert.... You must really have no eye for talent to pass over Kaepernick for Gabbert, to select a Punter over Russel Wilson... That in itself should be a lifetime ban from ever scouting for an NFL TEAM AGAIN. We doing it BIG....Florida State bringing that SWAG back in 2013!!!!

when he drafted Blaine Gabbert, I knew he had lost his mind. He was a QB that was not even that good in college.
I wonder if some of the other GMs in the NFL circle were fully aware of Gene Smith's tendencies and deliberately took advantage of it.
Pete Prisco thought the world of Gene, and I believed him. Monroe first pick solid, I'm ok with Eban Britton another guy that people might be a first rounder. Knighton ok, But then a trade of a 2 for another 3. Wasn't crazy about that.
I was in a restaurant when the Jags drafted Alualu. You could hear everyone say "Who?", then the word about SF wanting t trade with us but we were locked in. And 4 straight Defensive Linemen, I had doubts but believed. Was excited about Gabbert until I saw him play. And then in 2012 I was in Suns stadium with crappy wifi trying to follow draft and when Angers Name appeared followed by "PT". I thought what the hell is a PT? Then it dawned on me..... Punter. The last straw was easily the hiring of Mularkey for me.
LEONARD FOURNETTE FAN CLUB PRESIDENT. I WAS BEHIND HIM WHEN YOU ALL SAID HE WAS BRANDON JACOBS. QUIT HATING ON THE JAGUARS. GUS IS GONE. COUGHLIN HAS RESTORED ORDER. FOURNETTE IS FRED TAYLOR. DONT BELIEVE ME JUST WATCH.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

I started doubting him when he began creating holes in the roster and then being content with filling them with street free agents, undrafted rookies, or players off practice squads.
It was our receiving corps one year, our secondary the next, our QB and oline the next. It was like he thought he could get quality starter play out of guys who couldn't even make the 53 man roster of any other team in the NFL. I can forgive the draft mistakes because that is a crap shoot in a lot of ways, but knowing ahead of time that you are going to have a hole in the roster and making no attempt to bring in even journeyman level of players to fill that hole is just inexcusable. That is one of the reasons we are so devoid of talent now. Gene avoided the mid tier free agents that could potentially develop into starters or at least bring some depth, instead preferring to scrape the bottom of the barrel looking for talent, from which he found absolutely nothing.
When he traded our best safety at the time to packers for nothing. And then nail in coffin. When said receivers a dime a dozen.

I didn't like the trading of Reggie Nelson to the Bengals for a terrible scrub (D. Jones) and some conditional draft pick that never materialized. I remember a lot of people on this board were touting that move and saying that ”Gene fleeced the Bungles." Lol
Well, Reggie Nelson may have struggled early here. But, he has been a reasonably solid player/starter in a very tough Bengals defense. After that trade, doubt started to creep in for me. Although, I still had some faith. Alualu, Anger, and the insistence of playing Gabbert finally did it for me. I'm pretty sure that Nelson trade was Gene's doing (but I could be wrong).

Knighton ok, But then a trade of a 2 for another 3. Wasn't crazy about that. I think people within the media liked him because the man had an incredible work ethic. I know that Mike Mayock, Prisco, and yes even the mightily verbose Ketchman thought the world of him because they saw how much time and attention he put into the job. That part of Gene Smith is to be commended and not just thrown out. The bad part about Smith was that he simply didn't evaluate well. He wasn't lazy, he always put in his due dilligence, and he was never caught off-guard. He just didn't evaluate the impact that certain players would have correctly. Quote:All I know is he has 2 superbowl rings and worked with a HOF QB for a long time. Uhh... He only worked with said HoF QB for four seasons, then won his two Super Bowls at the end of that. Then he went on to win exactly one Playoff game since. Pardon me if I don't think that the man got lucky to walk into the Denver situation when he did.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

Quote:Getting a 7th round pick for a player he was going to cut? Nelson was definitely no fan favorite in Jax, that's true. But, even though he struggled here, he had more value than that (just my opinion, I know). I thought the pick was conditinal. Did the Jags even really get to use that pick? I can't remember. Regardless, my opinion of that deal was that the Bengals fleeced Gene, not the other way around as many on this board believed. They gave up a 7th rd pick for a player that has: started ever since they got him,, played very well (not near an elite guy, but has been a decent "ball hawker" getting INTs and creating fumbles),,and has been a good contributor to a stout Bengals Def. I didn't like the deal Gene got. But, in response to the OP topic, it was the first time I had a little doubt about him. I still had faith. It wasn't until much later that I turned away from liking him (Alualu, Anger, sticking with Gabbert). I did, however, give Gene credit for moving up into draft to get Gabbert when this team needed a franchise guy. But, after Gabbert's first horribad season and unimprovement, I would've liked to see Gene draft another QB or try to sign a good Vet (much better than Henne), instead of sticking with the Gabbert train.
As I recall, the Jaguars didn't even get a 7th-rounder for Nelson. The conditions of the pick weren't met. IIRC, all they got was a cornerback who was such a disaster that Jaguar fans, just for a moment, forgot about Will James.

The selection of Alualu with the 10th overall selection. That decision bothered me since day one. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie?
