Texans are close to acquiring Ryan Mallett

Brady is 37.

If Mallet is any good, Brady will end his career like every other great QB with a couple of good years left, on another roster.

If I were another team, the fact that NE wasn't willing to lock Mallet down long term and would rather trade him would be a red flag.

You made my point. I don't think he is the long term answer. And I doubt if NE thought he was that they would have drafted Garrapollo. Next offseason, some team will sign him to starter money. He'll be another Kevin Kolb/Matt Flynn type.

He would have to blow it up in the preseason to get starter money and if he did, NE would keep him. That would make him by far their best option going forward.

The guy has shown nothing since entering the league. People don't pay starter money for that. He will get a modest tryout contract somewhere.

Then try to explain why guys like Charlie Whitehurst, Kevin Kolb, AJ Feeley, Matt Flynn and Rob Johnson were given starter money. Because teams are desperate to find a QB. Mallett could enter free agency and show nothing more than he has already shown in the league. And he will get a long term deal from some team. Probably one of the ones I mentioned.

What?

John Elway

Troy Aikman

Steve Young

Dan Marino

Jim Kelly

I'll give you Manning, Favre, and Montana among others, but plenty of great QBs have finished their career with their main teams.

Has Houston signed him yet?  Last I heard they were really close back in May.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

How do you define "main" teams?  The team they played the bulk of their careers with?  The team that originally drafted them?  The team with which they had the most success?

Training camp in 2014 means nothing for him, he won't be starting for 3 years.

I'd have loved him as a second QB pick if he fell to the 4th round, he's too raw to start anytime soon but he'll be a good QB when he's ready.

Ryan mallett: still not a franchise QB.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

I don't really think I need to define it. My point is that none of those QBs ended their careers ended their careers "with a couple good years on a different roster". Aikman, Kelly, Marino, and Elway all only played for one team. Steve Young played His final 13 seasons (of 15 total) for San Fran.

I get that point about those QBs...and I am not arguing against you.  You are right that not every great QB wound up playing for another team to close out their careers.

I wonder about where other QBs would fall in that spectrum.

Where would you place Drew Brees?  Rich Gannon or Jim Plunkett?  Drew Bledsoe?  Not in terms of greatness per se...but what their "main teams" were.

It'd have to come down to an individual level. For me, it comes down to longest period of sustained success. I'd say:

Brees - Saints

Bledsoe - Patriots

Gannon - Raiders

I forgot about that. Yeah, he's as good as gone then.

Which is a shame because I believe Mallet will have trouble if he doesn't get near perfect protection, and he'll only get that in New England. In this day and age, you have to be semi-mobile to be successful.

THERE IS A SKELETON INSIDE OF YOU.

RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

These guys at least did something in games. Mallett's only claim to fame in the NFL is looking mediocre in his preseason games.

He hasn't done anything remotely close to showing he is a starting caliber player. Right now he hasn't even shown he can be a reliable back up.

When a team has a QB that they think can be the future of the franchise they walk away from the vet at the age Brady is now.
I guess I should clarify my point. People are saying that the 1 year left on Mallett's contract makes the timing off. I was trying to make the point that if Mallett were any good, the timing would be perfect based on what has happened to other great QBs in similar situations.

The examples I used were great QBs who had a young starting caliber QB sitting behind them. In those circumstances they pretty much all get let go.

If Mallett were truly a franchise guy, Brady would be gone next year and Mallet would have a big starting contract.

The point I was trying to make is Mallett and Brady's careers are perfectly coordinated for Mallett to take over and Brady to walk/retire. I don't think this will happen because I don't believe anyone thinks Mallett is the heir apparent. He hasn't shown anything to make any team believe he is the future of their franchise.

NE is hoping and praying that someone bites on this guy so they will have the ammo to go out and draft someone they actually think can be the future of the franchise.
