The only thing keeping Todman around is he's still the best option at KR.   If someone steps up there - he's probably gone.  Last night, he was the best of the three returners they used.  Robinson doesn't have the hands to do it yet and Chad Hall sucks.  It's up to Storm to earn the confidence of the coaches at KR if they are going to send Todman packing.  If he can't - I think Todman stays.  His KR average was 7th in the league last year. 

 

Robinson is going to be a great change of pace back.

I don't get it either. Todman is quicker to the hole than Storm. He's shiftier and certainly faster. He is better on special teams and is the better blocker.

Robinson, on the other hand, has impressed me.  He's shown flashes and promise that he's "getting" the position, that this experiment is not one of futility.

Todman was the starter in the first game. He was the backup in this game getting more carries than any other back. He'll probably be the back for the next game as well. Guess what? That means he is the clear backup. Storm certainly is no threat to him.

My problem with his "YPC" is that he had a few big runs, overall his runs weren't very good in totality, but he is doing what you'd want from a speed back.

He hesitates too much. He needs to learn that its ok to accept a 1 yd gain if nothing is there. Instead he dances and turns it into a 5 yd loss.

The coaches may be giving chances to the RBs each week. For instance, Storm got a bunch of carries first game and Todman got carries the second game. Robinson may be given the opportunity next week with 10 carries. Just a guess tho.

Not exactly a tough inside runner (yet?) but he's obviously got the speed to go outside. And I saw some vision when you got outside too - made some small cuts to get some extra yardage. The question is whether him being in the game pretty well tips off defences on what's coming up.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. I find it hard to believe the staff would be giving Todman first and second team carries if he was the RB on the bubble.

Why is it so hard for people to realize Todman is the clear guy at backup right now? That should have been obvious tonight. D-Rob is pushing him with Johnson looking like Johnson which is average. If they keep only 3 guys Storm is the odd man out and should be. He is clearly the least talented of the group.

 

Maybe because he's not?  I don't think the backup RB spot has been clear since they drafted Storm.  Drob has outplayed him so far and Storm isn't far behind Todman.  The only thing Todman had going for him was his kickoff duties, but Drob was back there doing that in Chicago too, so... not so secure after all.

Robinson is safe. I love seeing him get the football. He's very quick and shifty, and if he gets beyond five yards on any carry he could be off to the races down the sideline. Personally, I think Bradley and Fisch are setting the offense up to be ran mostly like this.

 

Gearhart is your workhorse, you let him wear down the defenders in the 1st half or during a few series, that either sets up the play-action and bootleg plays that we see Fisch call a lot of or it opens up the playbook more for the passing game by forcing a defender into the box.

 

Todman or Johnson would serve as Gearhart's spellback so he can catch some air when it's short yardage situations, and then naturally, you'd want to bring in or sprinkle in a fresh Robinson here and there to catch the defense napping. It makes sense. I like what I've seen so far out of Robinson. Gearhart's short performance changed my view point "slightly" with how we might run. Still two more games to see though.

I'm completely okay with D-Rob having a few 1-2 yard gains then breaking a 20-30 yard run. That's your typical scatback in the NFL and it tells me he's progressed far enough that we can actually call him that.

Jaguars.com's John Oehser said RB Denard Robinson "appears to be playing his way into a larger role."


Shoelace has compiled 70 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries working primarily with the third-team offense this preseason. He has looked much better than second-team back Jordan Todman, and should be given a chance to prove what he can do against stiffer competition. Robinson has a good shot to open the season as Jacksonville's COP back behind entrenched starter Toby Gerhart.

Yes but that was last year.  Hanging on to the football can be learned.  Just ask Tiki Barber.  Hopefully Denard has worked on it during the offseason and in training camp.

Totally agree.  I think we're all pulling for Denard to turn into something great.  Maybe the Jaguar's version of Darren Sproles?
