Shorts is the guy we NEED to play when we go against good secondaries

 

this week in DET is not a good secondary.  I expect to see more success in the passing game

He's a bonus/ luxury at this point...much like Blackmon. 

 

I'm fine with the WR corps as is with merely those 5. I really think Hurns is a legit find, and I also think that Taylor and Brown can be capable, dependable chain movers.

It's also an indication that maybe Henne isn't nearly as bad as some here want to portray it.  There's a reason he wound up the starter here last season.  He saw the receivers and was at least attempting to make plays while Gabbert was busy practicing his fetal roll.  Not trying to say Henne is anything more than serviceable as a starter, but he's a solid backup QB that this team will be able to rely on if needed once Bortles takes the top spot. 

 

I'm certainly not a Henne fan, but yeah, some of the success that WR group is enjoying also can be credited to the job that Henne is doing. As a backup, there are definitely worse.

Maybe it is true henne isn't so bad but everytime I see him hug the ball the moment he sees a blown block assignment, It just irritates me. Also the times he just tosses the ball into the breadbasket of a defender.

 

It wasn't long ago I said shorts should be traded but after our clear cut curse in affect at the WR position, Not so sure thats the best idea. Who knows how long Lee/robinson/hurns last

Bortles is obviously the future, but the passing game improved significantly with Henne out there.  Yes, the talent at receiver improved, but so did the talent at the QB position once he took over for Gabbert.  He'll still make the occasional boneheaded play, but there is far more consistency from the QB spot now than with his predecessor. 

 

Once Bortles takes over, the Jags could arguably have one of the better backups in the league in Henne, and the best part is that he understands and appreciates his role on this team.  He's not looking to be the guy like other backups.

I'd call it trading away your only experienced veteran receiver on a roster void of veteran receivers.

 

They played an interview with Marqise Lee this morning on 1010XL, and they asked him about the return of Cecil to the lineup, and he said it was a much needed boost because he's a true professional out there, and shows the younger players how to properly run their routes and do their jobs.  In other words, one of the new additions to the roster sees him as an asset and a mentor.  Meanwhile, you see him as trade fodder.  Thank goodness the front office is smart enough to know better.

 

It's okay to retain young, talented players who represent tremendous upside for your team on the field instead of trading away any player who might get you a mid to late round draft pick.  At some point, you have to play with the talent you have on the roster, and Shorts is without a doubt the best receiver on the active roster.

I'm expecting Bortles to stay the course and continue to out play Henne--only now the excuse of him doing it against 2nd and 3rd stringers wont apply.

They can't agree to a contract with Boone but still... 49ers have a huge surplus of WR's (Crab,Lloyd, Patton, Stevie J, Boldin)

IMO, Bortles has more than enough weapons at WR. The more important thing is to now protect him and keep him upright and not broken.

Boldin's oldin, Patto, Lloyd and Crabtree are really nothing special and Stevie Johnson is proving to be a one year wonder.

No team is going to offer a 1st or 2nd rounder for Shorts.  If they did, I'd be there to help him pack.  Since that's not the case, and we have to deal with living in the real world, there's no point in thinking Shorts is on the trade block for any other reason than a few years from now when he's in decline, TMD can say "I told you we should have traded him away years ago!"

What used to frustrate me was that for several years, we didn't let a veteran QB like Garrard change plays at the LOS.   They stacked the box against MJD, and we just slammed him into the teeth of the defense.   I saw it all the time- one on one coverage on the outside, and we ignored it and  handed the ball to MJD.  That was under Del Rio. 

 

Any HC that doesn't let their QB change plays based on what he sees is severly handicapping themselves. I think it's more along the lines of the QB himself won't change the plays or he just doesn't read the defense or formations well and goes with the play call regardless

Maybe it wasn't the coach handicapping himself, but the player?

I wouldn't call the Jags WR corp a surplus of anything. Shorts (always injured), Lee, Robinson (two rookies one who has been injured all offseason), Brown and Taylor (two WRs who are on the bubble according to this board) Hurns an UDFA, Blackmon and Sanders, the dirty dopers.

 

Also, I wouldn't think that anyone at THIS time of year has a "surplus" of OL they are looking to trade. And if there were any deals to be had, like Shorts for a 1st ([BLEEP]?) Caldwell would have already jumped on it.
