It's not huge news, but it's good to know they intend to keep him "in touch" with the ones while mostly doing service team stuff.  He's always one play away.

What it seems like is the coaches want to build chemistry between Bortles and the other 10 starters so whenever he is needed because of injury, he will not be thrown into the fire like Chad Henne was in Oakland. A big reason we lost that game was after Blaine Gabbert got hurt, Henne was totally unprepared and didn't gel at all with the receivers or offensive line. Having Bortles practice with the starters allows our offense to avoid a similar disaster if Henne gets hurt.

While that is true, i still think these coaches are doing the right thing.  Why risk it?  We aren't winning a super bowl this year and everyone knows that.  Let's play it smart with our new franchise QB.  Man that felt good to say.

Normally "the backup" doesn't get any first team reps during the season at all, because the starter gets all of them.

 

This isn't just about possible injury, it's clear they're thinking about his eventual insertion as starter.

Bradley also said Atlanta might be the last time we see Bortles play this year.. I feel like someone is smoke screening :yes: Yes Bortles could get first team practice reps and sit the whole year but it just seems so unlikely.

Absolutely not. David Caldwell said during  the draft he told both quarterbacks Chad Henne is the starter this year. Henne also was told during contract negotiations he will be the starter one year and, regardless of who they pick, the rookie will take over in 2015. Gus Bradley confirmed that is the plan on NFL Network. There is no way you can hear/read all that and think it is smokescreen.

Plans change all the time. I high doubt Henne plays well enough/stays healthy enough all year to keep Bortles off the field. I bet their is a 90% chance Bortles plays this year.

If I had to guess right now, given everything we've seen from Bortles....

 

I think he'll be in there for good by no later than week 5. I think week 3 makes sense, given the opponent (average D) as well as environment but they might still feel thats too soon. 

 

I don't think he'll be in permanently as soon as the first blow out in the 3rd Q since that might happen week 1.

lol, so you are saying if Bortles is in there, and the opposing teams runs one blitz package, Bortles will just fall apart mentally and the Jags will end up losing the game?? How in the world did you come up with this assumption??

Looks like BB will be splitting first team reps during the regular season with Henne. Which is more and more apparent that he's not going to sit the whole year like some originally assumed. I'm still thinking the home game against the Steelers week 5 is when he makes his debut.

 

No one "assumed" anything.  They listened to what the club said.

 

Tune in Thurs.  It might be the last you see of Blake in 2014.

 

If anything, we shouldn't assume anything about limited snaps in practice.  Should those snaps increase, only then will it be a story and an apparent sign of a change in plans.
