I never understood what that bumper sticker was getting at.   Do I have an alternative?   Are a lot of people that I don't know about choosing not to be an American?

What I never understood was all those mini foreign flags hanging from people's rear view mirrors of their cars.. You see them all the time.. You're American, fly the American flag.. Nobody cares if you're Puetro Rican, Mexican, Costa Rican or whatever.. I'm Irish, but I'm also American and fly the American flag, not the Irish flag.. Stupid..

I agree, I see it more so up here with the Irish/ British/ Italian/ whatever flags, but agree with your sentiment. Fly the damn American flag or else go live in the country that you apparently love so much.

Same thing with the language. So tired of us HERE being forced to cater to all of these other illegals that can't speak English so you see places of business seek to hire people who can speak Spanish or whatever just to accomodate THESE people. It should be the other way around....you're in our country, well our language is ENGLISH. It should be a requirement that these people learn our language if they want to be here. If I go to live in another country guess what I have to learn their language to survive, they aren't going to cater to me.

To be completely fair, Puerto Ricans are technically Americans as well. Flying the Puerto Rican flag is about on par with flying a state flag, in my opinion.

THERE IS A SKELETON INSIDE OF YOU.

RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

It's pretty rare you see people proudly displaying their state flag from their rear view mirrors or platered on their cars.

I think it's mandatory for Puerto Ricans.

For people who are recent (1 – 3 generations) arrivals to America and want to hold on to some link, some pride, etc. in their home land I see no problem with people displaying flags or other symbols of other places. In my estimation, it is truly an American thing to do since we’re a nation of immigrants, always has and always will.

I also have no problem with all the languages being spoken here as long as English remains the dominate one, which it always will. What can I say, I embrace diversity.

It’s interesting to me that those of us whose people have been here for generations want to tell the Americans who haven’t been here as long the speed to which they should assimilate. I wonder when theses’ people’s ancestors got here if they held on to some aspects of their home land as they assimilated over the generations.  I would imagine they did!

BTW, I believe the reason we see so many Puerto Rican flags and not as many Florida, Ohio, Vermont, etc. is because it’s more than just pride in the physical place for them. The vast majority of the people from or descendent of there consider themselves a unique ethnic group within the Hispanic diaspora. I’d agree with this notion since a “Puerto Rican” to me has distinct style, customs, diet, etc. that’s different from say a Mexican, a Honduran, Peruvian, etc.  They are a unique people, while still being “American” (since we brought them into the fold) and they want to embrace their uniqueness and hold on to it. Same thing for native Hawaiians, which is another group that displays a ton of pride out on the west coast.

<span style="font-family:calibri;">I never want to see the day when the Puerto Rican pride festival doesn’t happen. I’m not Puerto Rican, yet I very much enjoy going down to the Landing to see all the sites!!! :woot:

Not surprising that you feel this way, given your less than firm grasp at the English language. :whistling:

By the way, I totally disagree with the above. You wanna live here?..., learn and speak the damn English language.

It should be mandatory.

1st generation American, won't see any of our family flying the "Colombian or Canadian flag." Assimilate or go home is my stance.
