And the staff claims that Henne has made progress..... If so, we haven't seen it. Dude is notorious for playing poorly, but ultimately having decent stat lines. Then you go back and look at the scoreboard and you're like "oh....we only scored 13".

"The team only got a couple of field goals, and they were horrible on third down, but darn it he completed 60 percent of his passes for 195 yards". I just described about 80 percent of his games right there.

Anyone remember how Luke McCown used to light it up during the preseason?  Anyone?

Fair point..... Though I'm not sure we saw it as consistently with him. I mean, counting the scrimmage, this is 5 good outings in a row. And "consistency" was one of the big things Gus stressed with regard to the position earlier in camp.

So far one of the QBs has looked consistent. The other? Not so much.

I trust the people who drafted him and who have coached his development so far.   It was a great choice to draft him, and so far, he looks great.   So why stick our noses in it now, when the people who drafted and have coached him have done such a good job?   Why question their decisions, when every decision they have made so far, in relation to getting a new QB drafted and developed, has been perfect?   Let them keep doing what they're doing.   It's going really really well.   Why complain?

Anyone else remember people saying that we should trust Gene Smith because he is an actual NFL GM and we are all just fans on a message board. Before everyone gets all bent out of shape, I'm certainly not saying that Gus as a HC= Gene as a GM just as I'm sure you aren't saying that Bortles=McCown, only that the organization isn't always right, and the fans aren't always wrong.

It's not about right or wrong, it's about letting the guys that are paid to do their jobs actually be left alone to do their jobs until it's apparent they aren't cut out for it.  The "Start Bortles Now!!" crowd probably wouldn't walk in to McDonald's and start barking out orders for which employee should be on fries, which should be at the cash register and which should be cooking hamburgers.  That would be the manager's job and you'd let him do it.  So let the personnel manager and coach do their jobs as well.

We will see Bortles and it will probably be this year at some point.  Exercise some patience for the process.  If the product put out by the McDonald's in the above scenario was sub-par consistently, you probably wouldn't go back to that location.  You might even complain about the product to the manager, but you wouldn't point guys out and yell out "I want him cooking my burger!".  The manager should know what works personnel wise and if it's apparent he doesn't, a good owner would replace the manager.  This is how business is conducted.  When you boil it down, the NFL is a business just like any other.  The difference is you probably don't have an emotional attachment to McDonald's like you do to your pro sports team.  That being said, letting your emotions get the better of you and influence decisions doesn't usually translate to smart business decisions.

I've liked very much what I've seen from Blake.  A lot of times he's putting the ball where only his receiver can catch it and he throws it down field more frequently than we've seen in a very long time.  I also understand that he's mostly playing against 2nd string defenses that are running vanilla coverages and not scheming against him.  Let that last sentence sink in for a while.  We've seen pre-season success in the past that didn't translate into the regular season.  I'd be a little shocked if he came into game 1 of the regular season and didn't skip a beat from what we've seen in the pre-season.  In fact, I would expect him to be worse than Henne until he has an idea what defenses will do to try to confuse him.  I'm not at the closed door practices and meetings where I'm sure they are having more complex defensive schemes thrown at him.  When they think he can handle it in a real game situation they will put him out there.  And since I'm not at those closed door practices and meetings, I'll defer to the experts running the show that are.  If and when it becomes apparent the guys running the show don't know what they're doing I'll voice my concerns.  I would encourage anyone in the "Start Bortles Now!!" camp to look at things from this angle for a moment.

An added point to the above is that the coach owes it to everyone on the team to put the guy that gives them the best chance to win on the field on game day.  If he isn't doing that and the team senses he isn't, he loses credibility and risks losing the locker room.  When teams win, players get retained/extended.  Players that aren't retained/extended find it easier to get picked up by another team, etc.  It boils down to more money for players and that's what they're all doing this for.  For however many games he rolls with Henne as starter, you can take it to the bank it's because he thinks Henne gives them the best chance to win the game and he would know better than anyone.  Let him do his job.

Quote:Not necessarily, but what'd be gained by waiting til week 2 or 3? Seriously? Id rather he play and get as much experience as possible in the no pressure situation that is this season. Because come next season , there will be more pressure on the coaches, front office, and consequently Blake himself. That's the whole point of my arguement. They dont want pressure on him. Well this season would be the least pressure filled he would ever see.
A few weeks of game film, that's what will be gained. My money says he will watch it over and over, and become that much smarter because of it. As for the sheep comment- Id much rather be a sheep living in the barn than a troll living in the basement! At least we get sunlight.

What Blake may start? Who ever thought of this it's brilliant!!! Someone should compare Bortles and Henne's stats to see who is playing better.

If I cared as much about McDonald's as I care about the Jaguars, I would probably say something. I often request a particular server when I go out but that's beside the point. Blake saw the same vanilla defenses that every QB in the league sees in the preseason. The same types of defenses that Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan and Russell Wilson faced in their rookie preseasons. He played against 2s, but often with receivers, and linemen who won't even make the team. Of course I realize that my opinion is irrelevant, nothing that I or anyone else says on the board will change anything. My only point is that it seems that the primary argument against starting Blake seems to be that Gus and Dave say so and we should ignore what we see, what the numbers say and even what Super Bowl winning coaches like Gruden and Ditka say.

Umm.... He would be watching game film anyway? His routine really wont be much difft if he is starting, that's what people arent grasping. He's gonna get reps/watch film either way.

I seriously doubt Gus is in danger of losing the locker room.  I think you're spot on that Gus thinks Henne gives them the best chance to win, and that nobody outside of the organization, particularly on a fan message board, is going to know where Bortles is at in his progression better than the coaches working with him on a daily basis.  I don't see how sitting Bortles could be considered the wrong choice.  There's zero downside, especially considering the low expectations for this team this year.  He'll start when they decide he's ready to do so, and it's not going to impact our playoff prospects this year, or anything else for that matter.

The fact that users with less than 100 posts are telling Bradley and the team to start Bortles over Henne, suddenly makes me less eager for starting Bortles over Henne anytime soon...

Frankly, Bortles still hasn't proven himself against a solid 1st string defense. If he was able to do that against say the Seahawks or 49ers 1st string defense, than we can seriously start talking about starting Bortles in week 1. But for me at least, it's still too early to throw him out there to the sharks.
