I don't think Hurns is better than Shorts yet but here are a few reasons to why he could be if his game remains consistent from pre-season.

 

1. Hands. Hurns easily has better hands. Has the guy dropped one pass? I recall he had one pass in his hands that was knocked out by a DB who has his arms around him (was PI but not called).

 

2. Route running. The guy is where the ball is on a constant basis.

 

3. Pressure. It doesn't appear to phase him. He didn't look lost and nervous in the 2 minute drill against the Lions. He constantly showed up and made big plays when they were needed.

 

4. Size. He can break tackles with relative ease. Looks more muscular than he did in Miami.

 

1.  Hurns uses his body mostly to catch the ball.

 

2.  Shorts is obviously much quicker/more explosive athlete.

 

3.  Ok, seems confident.  That doesn't really equate to "talent" imo

 

4.  I don't recall him breaking any tackles this preseason.  If he did, please point it out cause I don't remember.

Again, I wonder how much of the perspective is colored by the fact he is an undrafted rookie free agent, how much is colored by his pre-exposure to the offense compared to the comparative lack of exposure to the system by other WRs, and how much of it is his natural ability as a player.

I don't disagree Shorts is quicker. However, Victor Cruz is quicker than Anquan Boldin. So what? They are two different types of receivers. I wouldn't mind having either on my fantasy team. They both serve their roles.

 

Confidence is a huge part of being talented. What good is a player if the game is on the line and they choke from nerves? Not saying Shorts is one of those guys because he has made clutch plays for us but I believe Hurns may hold that quality from the little we've seen.

 

I also don't recall Hurns breaking tackles but I believe it's fair to call him a physical receiver is it not? I think he's more suited in the strength department to take a drag route or hitch and break it for a big gain. I think Gus and the coaching staff believe that as well which is why he's our WR3 at the moment.

I'm sure it's a collective combination. Having the familiarity in Fisch's system is huge. Look at the Giants trying to learn the new OC's system.The real test for Hurns is coming up so it'll be interesting to see if he can ride the wave of momentum.

I like that Hurns is being given a chance and I don't care whether it's as 1,2 or 3 he's still earned himself a chance.  Time will work all of the depth chart stuff out but for an UDFA to come in and get the playing time is a pretty good accomplishment for him and it will be exciting to see if he can keep it up.

So, it stands to reason that there are varying opinions on who is the more talented receiver between Shorts and Hurns.  But, the prevailing mindset is that Hurns has potential, but Shorts is still the better receiver at this point, and there's really nothing to indicate that this is going to change. The only true knock on Shorts is his health.  Aside from that, he's a talented enough receiver to generate more than 1700 yards receiving and put up 10 touchdowns over the past 2 seasons taking passes from Gabbert and Henne.  I'd say he's done more than enough to prove he's a talented player in the NFL based on the stats he's put up with that kind of QB talent throwing his way. 

 

Some posters here just blurt out what suits their agenda.  They don't bother to formulate an opinion that's based on anything other than their opinion itself, and that's tainted by what they are fixated on.  So, a person who hates Shorts is going to focus all of her energy on trying to prove the point that she's right about her hatred for a certain player, even if it means throwing out some ridiculous nonsense that's completely unproven.

Hurns also knew Fisch's playbook and what was expected from him on the field.  Hurns was playing when all the WRs had some kind of nagging injury, especially Cecil Shorts III.  I am not trying to down play the fantastic performance Hurns has shown on the field, nor am I trying to say he doesnt deserve the praise and moving up on the depth chart but he still has to perform during  a regular season in the same fashion that Cecil has already done on more than one occasion until I'm willing to make any kind of leap to say that he is better than Cecil.

I was actually suprised to see that many in the media had him ranked as high as 31 on their boards....  that doesnt mean at the end of this season Hurns cant be on that list but he'll have to continue to perform the way he has during preseason...
