As with anything else, a value is dictated by the market, i.e., supply and demand.  His value is a future 7th round pic, that's the best the Pats could do.  So no, it's not great value or "pennies on the dollar".  And by "franchise ceiling QB", that label is coming from a fan with very questionable ability to evaluate talent, not GMs, scouts and coaches around the league.

 

Franchise ceiling QB.  That's such a nebulous statement.  It could also be said that he's a monumental bust floor QB.

The 49ers got a franchise ceiling QB in Gabbert for just a 6th round pick! When it's put that way it makes it sound much better for them than the deal really was.

That's why I said just about every QB.  It was partly tongue in cheek because "franchise ceiling QB" is pretty subjective, and not terribly specific.  But, just about any QB has the potential just as every QB has the same potential to be pedestrian or a bust.

Like I said, it's funny how the same receivers perform so much better with a different QB, yet it's the receivers fault.

 

All I can say is your team is going to regret not taking Bortles for a lot of years.

I'd rather have a bad season this year and pick up a better QB to go with a D that should be dang near unstoppable.

I just have to point out Mallet has a 5.2 QB rating and has thrown for a total of 17 yards in 3 years. For all of you mathematicians out there, that is 5.66 yards a year as a pro.

small sample set? even smaller than bortles? the guys has been in the NFL for years. he has done nothing. he had virtually no value, the patriots could never unload him. every preseason game except for 1 he played in he was below average to terrible.

his play in the regular season has been very very good. the contract didnt even cross my mind, it was all based on play.... but the contract is just another factor that goes into labeling him a franchise qb.
