Listen to a Hold Steady or Gaslight Anthem album.  Danava, Red Fang, The Passenger from Orlando, Barrio Tiger from L.A., there are literally thousands of straight up rock and roll bands, you just have to listen.  Best Coast, Cloud Nothings, Fake Problems, Frank Turner, Surfer Blood...

 

Edit: Billboard charts are irrelevant today, that's clear channel and the labels milking their death for the last few dollars they can get.

Most of the youth I know are into all genres of music, rock included.  The Hot 100 is for non music fans, those that still just consume what clear channel feeds them.  Anyone, who listens to the same twenty song playlist over and over again would be brainwashed though I think.

 

The problem is it still seems to be working. 

 

People like you I would guess would be in the minority amongst younger people. 

 

So many of them that I see are into ©Rap/ hip hop/ and dance. They don't like rock at all.

With the advent of the internet and digital distribution, there are probably a lot of good rock bands getting lost in the shuffle. Like someone said earlier, the record companies can't force feed you the same 20 or so bands and make them stars anymore.

What do you want?  Some band that can sell out arenas all over the world, those days are over, that doesn't mean rock n roll isn't popular. Beiber started via youtube, he's a teen idol, not a musical talent, he wasn't created by warner brothers, or universal, etc.  The majority of touring acts are rock bands, they just don't travel in busses with a bunch of semis carrying their pyrotechnics.  I see many more cut off jean shorts and jean jackets, and black t-shirts than anything else, when I go to shows.  Jay Z and Beiber are entertainers more than musicians.  Metal is bigger than ever, there are more metal genres than "popular music acts."

I think Gene is equally correct and equally wrong.  Rock music is not dead, I hear it every day streaming through my PC.  The days however of rock musicians making a living off of the radio and selling out arenas is however dead.  Technology has changed how we listen to and where we get music from today.  With these new changes us old farts have to be willing to change with the times as well.  Pandora will feed you all kinds of outstanding new artist.  I have no idea how they are getting paid for their talents however.

 

Also as someone else previously stated rock music has evolved.  When I listen to Sick Puppies play "Maybe" it screams rock and roll in every aspect of my definition.

Anyone who thinks "rock is dead" is living in a 70's or 80's vacumn. There are more rock bands now than any other time in history. Just because the labels can't force feed people the same twenty bands and make them rock stars like they once could, because they had a stranglehold on technology, distribution, etc. Certainly does not mean rock is dead.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but what is considered "rock" now is not what was rock 20+ years ago. I remember when Metallica was rock/metal not "Alternative" yes, they change (sold out). But new bands now that are "rock" aren't truly " rock".


That being said, as I grow older, I find myself listening to much rock now that is much softer than I grew up listening to. And... I enjoy listening to it as well. I like listening to 102.9 right now on local radio. It's pretty much that weak stuff I made fun of in high school. The older crowd on this board probably can add to this going back further than my example above.

They've been saying rock is dead since Elvis was swinging his elbows.  Rock is not dead, in fact it's not standing still at all.  There's tons of great rock music out there if you know where to look.  Gene Simmons is starting to sound like the grandpa he is.

The Beatles covered so many rock sub-genres it's not even funny.  But at their core, they were rock and roll indeed.  They used to cover Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, the list goes on.

Gene Simmons is just talking crap because nobody wants to see them play. I saw Motley Crue with Kiss playing right before them, and I love Kiss as much as the next guy, but they were beyond boring. Motley Crue though, oh man.. plus I get to see them again here in Jacksonville later on this year.
