Not a fan of Mariota like most people are.  I think he's a bit raw, and personally don't think he'll make as big of a splash in the NFL as people think he will.  

 

I don't think he's really 1A for me.  I like Hundley better.

It is pretty clear to see that the option read is being easily neutralized in it's second NFL year. Just look at the statlines for RG3 and Kaep.

 

RG3 2012: 20 TD 5 INT 65.6% Completion 5.1% TD Percentage 1.3% INT Percentage 8.1 YPA Passer Rtg: 102.4 QBR: 71.41

RG3 2013: 6 TD 5 INT 59.8% Completion 2.9% TD Percentage 2.4% INT Percentage 6.9 YPA Passer Rtg: 80.4 QBR: 30.86

 

Kaep 2012: 10 TD 3 INT 62.4% Completion 4.6% TD Percentage 1.4% INT Percentage 8.3 YPA Passer Rtg: 98.3 QBR: 76.79

Kaep 2013: 8 TD 5 INT 55.9% Completion 5.0 TD Percentage 3.1% INT Percentage 7.2 YPA Passer Rtg: 83.9 QBR: 56.04

 

QBR and passer ratings have fallen off of a cliff, YPA is down by more than a yard per player and they are throwing INT's at double the frequency they were last season. Mariotta will have to adapt and become a pocket passer if he wants success in this league. I think that he can do it, but for this reason alone you stick with Teddy as #1.

Let put it this way, he has a higher floor. All you are doing is comparing physical talents instead of looking at how they play and styles on the field. Murray is a more polished qb than mariota.

I really don't understand this question. Super Bowl winning Quarterbacks are pretty rare, and I feel confident in saying that it really takes a great team who is operating at a high level just to be in a Super Bowl.

 

I don't think that Mariota is a better Quarterback than Bridgewater, but I also know that I want my team to have as many real advantages that I can get. If that means that I walk out of the locker room with an athletic QB, then so be it. As long as he can operate my system, then why not? Does Mariota read Defenses as well as Bridgewater does? It doesn't seem that way to me, but I really don't know. Then again, we also don't know that Mariota won't surpass Bridgewater in the long term seeing as how he is only now in his second season within his current offensive system and Bridgewater is in his third.

 

Mariota is an intruiging prospect with a lot of tools, that's all. Bridgewater is an even more intruiging prospect with a different, but comparably potent, set of tools as well.

It is a pretty simple question. When was the last time a Superbowl was won thanks to an athletic qb? You need a qb who can drop back and throw in this league or you just won't have sustained success.

Its the perfect storm of crap - 

 

Measureables + arm strength + 40 time + video game numbers due to gimmick offense...

 

Add in some irrelevant highlights like the 70 yard TD run straight up the gut from the pocket (that would NEVER happen in the NFL) and you have dolts buying into Mariota. I just hope Caldwell isn't one of them. 

 

Bridgewater has the stuff that really matters and is time-tested.

This season is making me sad. Still so long to go and to think we might end up winning a few games and losing the #1 pick is saddening. Then again I'm sure we'll get a good QB regardless. Still would be nice to get the best though!

Funny how some people keep saying that Mariota "can" throw from the pocket and all but all the big plays I see from him are either him running and making a play with his feet that would never happen in the NFL, or another one of his lock on first reads where the guy is open by 5 yards and even a Henne could make that throw. 

 

I have yet to see Mariota highlights where he beats tight coverage while going to his 2nd or 3rd reads...for big plays or displays Bridgewater-like football intelligence on pre-snap or post snap reads.

Any qb can throw from the pocket when your o-line gives you all day and you play action into a one read that is open like the like sun is on a sunny day because the defense bit on the read-option that you previously broke for a +20 yd gain. Blaine Gabbert threw from the pocket at Missouri. It goes far beyond just throwing from the pocket.
