Unless we're getting Harbaugh/ Belichick/ Chip Kelly or another of Oregon's disciples to run a similar offense here/ help develop the QB.....then, no, Mariota won't be a very good consolation prize.

He had a similar play last year as well against Oregon St where he took off right up the middle untouched. As for the argument for Gabbert, I believe he would have been an effective QB at Oregon absolutely. Guys like Dixon, Thomas and Masoli all put up great numbers and were perennially competitive and Gabbert is better than all 3 of them.

As I said before (don't remember if it was this thread or another) but I don't understand how people can say Teddy playing a soft schedule means nothing, but Mariota playing in the offense his coach makes him run means a ton. In both cases there are plenty of opportunities to evaluate pro tools aside from scheme and competition. Both excel.

There is certainly a case that can be made, but I've not seen enough to suggest that Mariota can be a day one starter because the offense that he runs is actually a huge detriment to his NFL success. I would strongly advise him to leave after this season, as the longer he stays in Eugene, the more his bad habits will be cemented. He throws off of his backfoot all the time and his footwork and accuracy are sloppy, sloppy. Again, I'm on record saying he is a top 10 pick, but he hasn't shown me enough to give him the keys to the crib Week 1 2014. Best case scenario? He learns behind a veteran and works with a QB guru and is possibly ready to start by the middle of next season. You look at a guy like Teddy and I would bring him in to start tomorrow.

Also, a not saying QB don't run and pick up yards......I'm saying that play that Mariota had in college where he took the snap ran directly up the middle of the field for 70 yards, untouched for a score simply won't happen in the NFL and it won't. But that won't stop mouthbreathers from being influenced by such plays and especially when that combine comes around and Mariota blows up and gets all those fancy 40 times, and benches 225 30 reps, etc etc......you know, stuff that really doesn't matter for an NFL QB..... :blink:

Not doubting that with all other important QB aspects being equal (pocket presence/ accuracy/ football IQ/ footwork/ delivery/ arm strength/ etc) being equal, as a tiebreaker, I'd then take the QB with more athleticism over the other....

Otherwise, it doesn't matter, Mariota and QB from that system and similar college offensive systems like it, pale in comparison to a QB like Teddy Bridgewater, who is light years ahead of them from a football IQ perspective. Mariota and his one read and take off repitiore will struggle to adapt to the pro game unless a select few teams draft him. (Kelly/ Belchick/ Harbaugh)

Things I took away from the article:

He didn't play his best game against Rutgers, but I tend to evaluate quarterbacks by how poor their worst throws are, and he only had four, by my calculations.

I know TMD mentioned Bridgwater having a bad game and that possibly swaying Dave Caldwell's decision. Hopefully Dave takes a page from the "NFC's scout" book.

He also told me Bridgewater was a more talented and refined version of New York Jets QB Geno Smith.

Ouch.

Although I couldn't get a direct player comparison from the scout, he didn't blink when I relayed my comparisons to  Alex Smith  and Aaron Rodgers.

More talented and refined than Geno Smith isn't exactly an insult.  Geno was a 2nd round QB, and he's a starter in the league right now.  Being a more talented and more refined version of that would equal much better things.  

 

Alex Smith wasn't a bad prospect either.  Ultimately things didn't wind up going his way, but this is as a prospect goes we're talking about.  Not NFL careers.
