Gabbert never had a fair shake. We really dont know where Gabbert's ceiling was. He went through multiple OCs and he had JDR and Malarki (however you spell it) as HCs. I believe the young man has good talent and could have been an ok to good QB, maybe great if he would have sat his whole first year like we are trying to do with Bortles. He was said to be a project and not ready, but he was thrown into the fire and got burned due to him not being NFL ready. He never really had any stability through his tenure here with the franchise.

 

Now, you ask why did I support Gabbert over Henne? First, I knew Henne was garbage from his time in Miami. The guy was a pick 6 waiting to happen. Just like Gabbert should have never been drafted that high, Henne should have never been signed. Fans bashed sunshine for holding the ball too long, not climbing the pocket, not being able to audible to a compitent play, not being able to call out blocking assignments, and folding in the pocket. And what does Henne do now? All of those things. Brass claims that they are sitting BK5 to learn from Henne but wha tis he learning? If it was me, I would have kept Gabbert since you know he had an expiring contract and you could have easily parted ways with him after this season. Henne would hae been perfect trade bait for a decent TE, OL, or FS.

That's a fair opinion.  I don't agree with it all, but there is no way to argue it since it didn't happen.  I don't think you could get anything in a trade for Henne however, as we did for Gabbert so i'm glad that happened.  I also don't think Gabbert would have ever been anything, regardless of how the situation was handled, but thats a differing opinion in a matter where we'll never know.

I agree with your tone, but differ a little in the detail.

 

Being afraid to be hit and falling apart from being hit are different things.

 

I think Peyton Manning is afraid of being hit, but he doesn't fall apart when he does get hit.

 

Gabbert wasn't just afraid of getting hit, he would be shaken up for significant stretches of games after being hit. He would have needed the great offensive line in NFL history just to have a chance.

 

NFL players are going to get hit.

No one else persued him in Free Agency except us.

GMs around the NFL generally aren't that gullible. Sometimes they'll make a deal like that for a young player, but they're mostly making that move based on what they thought of the player coming out of college.

 

For a QB as old as Henne you wouldn't find someone willing to trade for him unless he were to suddenly light it up in a way he's never done before.

 

Those four wins at the end of last season came against 3 other bottom feeding teams.

A rookie QB who has to line up with two rookie WRs, a rookie TE, a rookie C, a rookie RG, and a rookie RT? 

 

No.   Keep Henne in there for now.   I do NOT want to throw Bortles out there with offensive linemen who can't block, and WRs who don't know the right route.  

 

I, for one, believe that this is a very big reason that they won't put BB in at QB for as long as they can get away with it.

 

I think if the o-line was better, probably just even average and able to protect the QB more, and there weren't so many other rookies on offense, that they would be much more ready to put BB in if Henne continues to struggle.

 

Unfortunately, that's not the case, and I just believe that they just don't want to put BB in that kind of situation as a rookie.

 

If Henne gets injured, they will be forced to put BB in there.

 

Is that the only way BB gets into a game? I'm not sure about that.

 

While I believe they would like the o-line to be playing better before they put BB in, there has to be a point where there is only so much ineptitude they can take on offense.

 

Unfortunately for all of us, they have a much higher tolerance for ineptitude on offense than most of us on here.

I've never understood the whole slam about learning from Henne.  He's been around the league for a while and has a ton of starting experience.  He may be a below average QB on the field but that doesn't have to translate to knowledge and teaching ability.  Coaches in this league can't go out there and play but does that make them inept?  Is Jerry Sullivan not qualified to teach because he can't torch DBs?  Enough with the dumb comments people, you don't sit in the meetings and practices and hear what's going on.  And if you did, it would all be waaay over your head.

He got drafted in the lockout year so his off season was shortened, he came to the team as the third qb and was treated as such by a lame duck coach and then was sent to the wolves in game 3 with no starter reps or anything. He was gonna fail due to the situation alone. He would have had to be Dan Marino caliber to over come all that adversity and that's just not fair to ask of anyone.

I saw one sack where Henne dropped one step, pump faked and was hit. Another he had a five step drop and didn't even have time to step up properly before having two defenders hit him. That's not holding the ball, that's horrible blocking and a rookie QB isn't going to magically fix the O-line. 

 

 

So you pointed out two sacks where Henne sacked with nothing he could do. Six out of the ten sacks that happened on Sunday happened in 2.5 seconds or more, which is the average time to get rid of the ball. With a competent QB, there are 4-5 sacks instead of 10.
