Poz - "We're a zone coverage team"
|
Couple things.. seattle is a press zone cover 3 zone team where the corners press and play kind of a man coverage on the outside unless the wrs break inside.. that is what we r trying to do but where as seattles defenders play a matchup zone where they cover and continue to follow a guy that runs in there zone and continue following him outside their zone if no one else is around.. our morons stand in their place and once a guy moves out of the spot they are standing in they let the wr run free expecting someone else to magically pick him up... sadly this is how we have ALWAYS played zone even with past defensive coordinators and it makes no sense other than our players suck.. i dont think the cbs have been to bad it is almost exclusively the linebackers and safety play.

Quote:I hate to say it... and I know I'm not the first, but Poz is looking a step closer to being done. We need LBs bad. I think it looks that way because he's running all over the field trying to make a tackle after someone else failed.
Personally, I have never been a fan of any zone coverage schemes. I've always liked man-on-man coverage. You put your best guy out there on an island with my best guy, and let's see what happens. Pin your ears back and get after the QB. Depend on your front seven to snuff out the run and get after the QB and just let the CB's do their jobs one-on-one. If you're struggling against the run, bring the Safety up, if you're struggling against the pass, roll the coverage over onto one side and double up on your thorn of your secondary.

The safeties/corners definitely have not figured out when to take over each others assignments. Combine that with the newly acquired "upgrades" at OLB not knowing when to drop in coverage and this scheme has been one giant train wreck in these three games. It's conceivably correctable - but without greater speed at LB and faster recognition by the secondary - there will be lots of open receivers and TEs roaming in Jaguar territory. Obviously - a pass rush like we generated in the first half of the iggles game would help, but the Jags back seven really have to start executing. I was never a fan of zone D either, and have had an open mind toward this version of it….. until now. It's hard to watch. We show less advertisements to registered users. I personally don't have a preference for what defense should be run because every scheme can/will be beat. Teams that run a lot of man to man coverage can struggle to stop "pick" plays. Everybody is locked on their guy and a simple rub/pick leads to a guy running across the field wide open. Teams that are zone heavy can end up looking like the Jags yesterday. The defense just has to play better regardless of what scheme is being run. Maybe the team just doesn't have the dudes yet to be a successful defensive unit. I'm hoping at least some of the dudes are here and they just haven't figured out how to play together yet.

Quote:Gus touched on that today at his press conference. Something along the lines of the players not trusting their teammates to be in the right position and in turn causing them to be out of position by trying to do it all. It just goes back to being a young team and going thru the growing pains of gaining experience.

It just goes back to being a young team and going thru the growing pains of gaining experience. I've definitely seen this happen a half dozen times. Between Gratz and Guy. Evans and Guy. Smith and Poz. And I'm sure a few others that I don't recall as specifically. Quote:Agreed. The secondary looked a heck of a lot better in the first half of the first game when we actually had a pass rush. I'm not sure what happened there for the last 10 quarters, but it hasn't been pretty. If they don't get the line back on track, the secondary is going to continue to struggle. We are tied for the lead with 10 sacks. The sad part is that Washington is also tied for the lead with 10 and got all of their sacks against us. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
It was pretty simple to see we were a zone coverage defense when we played the Redskins. On the TD that got past Gratz you can see them shuffling in their own zones. Gratz slid up away from the outside man to cover the inside route thinking that he had safety help behind him, which he didn't because the safety also slit up to cover the inside route. That is miscommunication resulting in blown coverage which resulted in a TD.

When opposing offenses have the ball for 50 min a game, you're going to get more sacks. Also Foles was holding onto the ball way too long that first half We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
And I'm sure in practices the players all knew their assignments but since its so new, when the pressure of real games comes at them, they have to think and that makes everything they do go slower.

Quote:You need high quality DB's and LB's to play man coverage. If your teammate gets beat 1 on 1, it's probably a touchdown unless a safety makes a stop. I have a feeling we would get destroyed 1 on 1. There's a reason why the man coverage teams are like the Bears, Cardinals, and Seahawks. Those teams have Patrick Peterson, Richard Sherman, Charles Tillman, Tim Jennings, Maxwell, Cromartie, etc...It would certainly be a challenge for Gratz, Blackmon, McCray and Ball to cover 1 on 1... but hey, we're allowing other teams to set records against us while we try to run zone... it's just not working for us. There's no logic in sticking with what isn't working, is there?

Dude... you say that, but, I look at it like this. We've been outscored now 118 points to just what? About 48 or 50 points? Whatever this defense is running RIGHT NOW, it's not working. We need to change something up, somewhere. I am not going to fault the defense completely for this team's failures though during the first three weeks. We cannot run the football. It's pathetic, and sad to see actually as a life long fan that grew up on this team. I don't think I've ever been a fan going into any off-season worrying so much about the running game. We always seemed to have that right somehow. Whether it was Stewart with Taylor, or Taylor with Mack and then later on, MJD, and then eventually MJD on his own. I can't recall seeing this team SO BAD at running the football. Whether it's lack of speed on the runningback, or just flat-out no holes or gaps opening up behind this offensive offensive line. It's mind numbing. In fact, the pass protections hasn't been this bad since arguably the 2008 season when Harris was picking up street free agent nobodies to plug and play. I know we're still rebuilding. It's year two of the Gus and Dave era. But Jesus... it's not looking too good right now anywhere. With the exception of Hurns here and there and Bortles half-time emergence.I'll remain hopeful. But I would hate to see this team finish less than 4 - 12 from last year. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? It appears they have decided to just bench a couple players instead so we can see how that turns out, but we have been running the worst defense in the league and its largely from blown coverages, not poor coverage.
