There's a reason they're eager to get Colvin out there.  They want to see him starting on one side, and McCray on the other when that happens.  They see Gratz better suited to play the nickel. 

 

Interesting. I'd like to see McCray get some extended playing time for sure.

It's crazy to think that just about every hit DD laid on receivers back then now would be 15 yard penalties.

Yeah, he probably wouldn't thrive in today's NFL.  The fines would be killing him.

See recent top CBs Dee Milliner and Morris Claiborne. They were both #1 CB in drafts. In fact, if you look at all 1st round draft CBs over the past few years, there are a whole bunch who havent preformed up to draft status. Then you have Richard Sherman and Honey Badger late. CBs are tough it seems. Who recently has been a slam dunk in round 1 outside of Patrick Petersen? I'm not thinking of one off the top of my head right now.

I'm not sure what this means?  Maybe suggesting we roll the dice and draft the one we feel is best in the 1st?  We can't draft every one.

Having past Jag greats help out coaching is something I've been preaching for many years. DD, Boselli, heck, get J. Smith too.

Not sure what Brackens is up to, but maybe he's got value.

Fuller does look like the truth. Haden is pretty good it's just the Browns.

Donovin Darius is on with Dempsey and Garrard on the Jags show on 1010XL, and he's talking about the fact that he's been mentoring for the Jaguars for the past couple of seasons, and specifically working with Cyprien and now Josh Evans.

 

He was asked about what he thought was the reason for the struggles this defense is having right now, particularly in pass coverage.  He talked about the fact that it's not the coaching or the play calling that's really hurting these players.  He said it's the fact that you've got so much youth on the team, particularly in the secondary, that these players need to develop a routine where they're working overtime on technique, and understanding the fundamentals of their positions.  Right now, he said that the younger players are struggling to understand things like the difference between cover 2 and cover 3, contain, etc.  He said that it's a matter of the young guys buckling down and putting the time in, and he's doing his part to mentor these guys to help them to develop a work ethic that will allow them to succeed.

 

Anyone who knows where Darius is coming from knows that this guy was the king of routine, and nobody was going to outwork him when it came to developing his skills as a player.  To hear that he is in there working with the youngsters to help them develop is a great move by Gus.  Darius was saying that Cyprien has developed, and it's showing on the field in how he's recognizing things more quickly.

 

 

I've been saying this. It's lack of discipline. Just because you get the job doesn't mean you don't have to put in the time and work. These guys have talent and have been told most of their lives that talent will get them where they want to be. And in high school and college that can be true. What no one seems to tell them is when they get to this level everyone (for the most part) is talented. Now they actually have to WORK.

 

I'm so glad Donovin is working with them. They need this work ethic instilled into their pysche. I think it would make a world of difference.

Darius could flat out knock you out, but he couldn't cover.  Between the overly happy flags for hits and the passing league nowadays, not sure he would excel today.

I don't think he meant they don't know the difference between cover 2 and 3, I think he meant they are getting their assignments confused in different situations.

 

There are literally dozens of possible formation and route combinations an offense can throw at you. On a particular route and formation, a DB may pick up a particular receiver in cover 2 but may release him in cover 3. If you change the formation, the opposite may be true.

 

I think it is more about distinguishing the assignments with all the looks they will see. Something they will have to study more to fully grasp in order to be on the same page with everyone else.

What I read from FBT's awesome OP is that the young players don't have strength in the locker room in terms of how to really be a pro.

 

This is concerning to me.  You'd expect them all to be professionals in their craft, but how many early 20 year old kids really think that way?  

 

Therefore, it would be wise to have veterans on a football team, even if they cost more.  Yes the salary cap is an issue, but if you have a pro that can't cut it, but understands what it means to put in real WORK, then you should keep them.

 

Now I know we all hate Henne...  But perhaps that why they kept him around.

 

As far as the D side...  It seems we're lacking.  If DD is so great at motivation, why isn't he actually on the Jaguar's coaching staff?  

 

I'm just wondering these things aloud.  I'm not trying to stir anything here.  It's just my original thoughts based on what I read from the Original Post.
