I'm still in favor of Teddy, due to the poise, football intellect, arm talent, and off-the-charts intangibles -- but Mariota is an undeniably breathtaking athlete at the QB position.  I actually read a blurb first thing this morning (forgot where) that said Dave Caldwell was very high on Mariota, as he should be.  Mariota has that "IT" factor.

 

It's a win-win scenario, in my opinion.  I'd be thrilled with either guy.  The best part is Teddy is only 20 and Mariota 19.  They are this good as such a young age.

This almost seems like this is a Luck or RG3 conversation to me. They both are good just two different types of quarterbacks. Bridgewater is more of your prototypical quarter back with intellect, accuracy, and pocket awareness where Mariota is one of he qb's who fit the direction that the league has gone in. He has arm strength and some accuracy but his speed and athleticism is what keeps his game on par. He would need to have an offense tailored to him like RG3 did but could potentially see similar success if he can stay healthy.

 

I personally would take Bridgewater because I believe that style of quarter back is more sustainable and the potential is greater but I would be totally fine with Mariota as a consolation prize.

The beginning of the Tennessee game he shows his ultra inconsistency with accuracy. He will go through periods of awful throws and then make a big time throw.

You may think that Bridgewater is better, and there's no problem with that, but the way you talk about Mariota as if he's some scrub as a prospect just because he is threatening Bridgewater's place as the #1 pick overall, is downright pathetic. As far as I'm concerned, there are 2 elite QB prospects this year, and one of those guys has a higher ceiling, and that is Mariota.

It's kind of silly to even compare the two given their styles of play are completely different.  The only reasons they are being compared is because they both play the quarterback position and will both be high draft picks, but I do think both will have success at the next level.

 

I'm still hopeful we land Bridgewater though.  Too good a prospect to pass up.

That was a mistake on my part.  I read somewhere that a couple of GM's were very high on Mariota and, given I read it at 7 am before I had my coffee, I read it as Dave Caldwell being interested.  That was my fault.

I agree that Bridgewater is a considerably better prospect than Mariota. I also prefer pro style QBs. I don't get where this idea that Russell Wilson has been slowed down or figured out is coming from. His numbers are pretty much identical to Andrew Luck's for the year and his team is 5-1. Just a side note.

And we can debunk this right now. Kaepernick is without his #1 WR Crabtree who was his go to last year, RG3 is still recovering from his ACL and its obvious, and Russell Wilson is doing just fine.

Kaepernick just doesn't look the same player.


Russell Wilson is turning the ball over a lot more he has 7 turnovers this years compared to the 13 he had all of last year including the play offs.


Rg3 is recovering from an acl but he only got the injury from lacking the instinct to protect himself (drawback of read option opposed to pro)

We heard that Gabbert had "all the tools" to become a great pocket passer, too. How'd that one work out?

 

As a matter of fact, I remember constantly hearing arguments around the time the Jags drafted Gabbert, that - "the reason Gabbert wasn't all that productive in Missouri was because he's more suited to be a traditional QB in a traditional offense" and was the #1 QB prospect coming out of high school".....or something similar.....

so if it didn't work out for Gabbert...never try again? it's really not a fair comparison, just because they're both raw prospects, Mariota is so much more athletically gifted, much more like Kaepernick than Gabbert IMO

No, not "forget about getting a QB", but "forget about getting a raw prospect that needs a ton of work just to have a chance to be successful in a pro system". Forget all these stupid read option QB's that who seem to be prevalent on the mouthbreathers wish-lists. 

 

Unless we plan on upgrading/ changing the OC to someone like Chip Kelly/ Harbaugh/ et al, it would be a waste of time to bring in someone like Mariota in here. 

 

A QB like Teddy is clearly the best fit for what we need.
