Report: Raiders firing coach Dennis Allen

The Associated Press reports the Raiders will fire coach Dennis Allen.


Reporter Terry Collins is not a typical Rotoworld source, but the AP has stringent standards. Per Collins, an announcement may not be made until Tuesday. It would be bizarre for a team to go two days between deciding to fire a coach and announcing it, but this is the Raiders, and the team is still in London following Sunday's shellacking. Allen hasn't done anything to suggest he's the man to lead the Raiders out of the mire, but anyone who's followed the situation knows GM Reggie McKenzie's persistently disastrous personnel decisions are the real problem in Oakland. Allen would be a textbook scapegoat for his boss' failings. The Raiders have been the worst-run team in football for over a decade, and there's no light at the end of the tunnel.

Updating an earlier item, the Associated Press' Terry Collins has deleted his report that the Raiders are firing coach Dennis Allen.


The wording of Mr. Collins' tweet was bizarre, but we went forward since he was a reporter for the Associated Press. There is still a strong chance Allen is fired during the Raiders' Week 5 bye, but it has not happened yet. The Raiders don't depart London until Monday morning. It's unlikely any decisions will be finalized before they arrive back in Oakland.

Could end up being false. Stay tuned.

He's good as gone, don't know if I blame Dennis Allen for the debacle going on in Oakland, Reggie McKenzie is proving to be one of the worst GM's of the 2000's, he's up there with Gene Smith.

Everybody said the Raiders would change when Al Davis died. But is has just been more of the same. Al was notorious for signing veteran players past their prime. McKenzie this offseason signed guys like Justin Tuck, Maurice Jones-Drew and Lamar Woodley. It is like Al never died. They are rebuilding but have the oldest roster in the league.

Just look at the QB situation, its pure incompetence. McKenzie inexplicably trades for the noodle armed Matt Flynn, then drafts Tyler Wilson in the 4th round, he then proceeds to cut both Flynn and Wilson that same year. That was 2013, in 2014 McKenzie (again) inexplicably trades for the aging washed up Matt Schaub and announces him as the team’s starter, proceeds to draft Derek Carr in the second round only to have Carr beat out the guy he traded for, Reggie McKenzie is wayyyy over his head and has been on the hotseat since the start of the 2013 season, so what does he decide to do in order to save his job? Signs a bunch of aging ineffective veterans no one else wanted, make no mistake about it, I think the Raiders have a better team than the Jaguars, but at least we’re young. They’re the oldest team in the league, I feel awful for Raider fans, a house cleaning is in order.

The unfortunate part for a guy like Derek Carr is his injury, it will keep him out for the foreseeable future, surely the Raiders will have a new GM and head coach next year, and surely that GM and coach will want their own QB. Carr didn't show a lot while he was in there and may not get a chance to show anything because of the injury, the 2015 QB class has a chance to be special is Jameis and Marcus declare, the Raiders and Jaguars are destined for the top two picks in the draft, Carr is screwed Imo.

Sometimes you just have to blow it all up and hit the reset button. Gene tried to do the same thing and patchwork a team together. That's not how you rebuild and now the Raiders are going to have to pay for it 4 or 5 years down the line from now.

I really wouldnt be surprised if he is fired way before the season ends. Living in the area raider fans are just confused at what the team keeps doing, they seem to support their team like they should but.... The track record has not been good at all with Allen.

By firing Allen now, the Raiders will theoretically get a head start on their next permanent hire. If Mark Davis is anything like his father, the choice will be difficult to predict. We wonder if McKenzie will still be around to see it.

The Raiders also have the NFL's hardest schedule because of the division they are in. They had to know that while signing all of those over-the-hill players like MJD and Tuck.

 

Obviously until McKenzie is fired, the team will have a top 10 pick in the draft.

Hue Jackson was the coach before he's the OC with the Bengals now

 

Hue Jackson was one of the Raiders better coaches since Jon Gruden.   His failing was making football front office type of decisions,  as the trade for Carson Palmer made no sense from the moment it was executed.    That trade is a significant reason why Jackson's current team is in very good shape.
