They made the right call. Throwing a pick 6 in that situation would have had luminaries like you howling from the rafters that they should have just run the clock out.

The team was 0-3, probably not gonna win anyway, and blake was gonna throw his share of picks. I wouldnt have complained because at least they were trying. This staff is conservative at the wrong times and agressive at others. Like going for it in our own territory week 1. Gus is a horrible game manager

The expectation SHOULD have been that the team comes out of the half and stops San Diego.  If you think they SHOULD have made some effort in less than a minute to put points on the board, most likely a field goal, that would have meant that it was meaningless since you subsequently expected them to let San Diego score on the opening drive of the 2nd half.  So, again, what does it matter if they made the more conservative call and avoided potential disaster.  They lost by 19, so would a 16 point loss have been more satisfying for you?

I'm not defending "game management."  I'm saying that based on the team we're fielding, they were making what they felt was the smart call, and I agree that avoiding potential disaster there was the right thing to do.  You don't agree.  We get it.  Whining is in your DNA, so carry on with your little hissy fit about them running out the clock.

Relax.  It was the first start for the rookie QB.  It's okay to be conservative in that situation to avoid making a critical mistake that blows up in your face.  I have absolutely no doubt that had they gotten aggressive there and tried to force the ball down the field to get into field goal range, and Bortles threw a pick that went the other way for a touchdown, people of your ilk would be blasting the play calling that way as well. 

By this time next year-especially if Blackmon is back and playing up to capabilities-this team will not approach a similar situation in a similar fashion.

 

I have little doubt the team would try to move into scoring position.

A 16-point loss would have been more satisfying to me because I wanted to see what Blake can do in a hurry-up situation. Now I am still left with the question "Is Bortles a good clock manager?" becaues Jedd Fisch did not tell him to run a one-minute drill. That was really the big disappointment for me.

I have no doubt in my mind that Bortles is a good clock manager.

 

He proved capable of doing that in the preseason against Detroit, where right before half, he drove the team down the length of the field, starting from inside his own 5 yard line.

 

He's heady enough to have already mastered the fake spike.

 

Picture Bortles, and the rookies with a year's experience under their belt, with Blackmon, working together for a full offseason.

 

That will definitely be worth the price of admission.

I did not watch that Lions game. In preseason all I saw was the first half of the Falcons game, when no game clock management was necessary.

Well that's the logic we have to assume was the reason for running out the clock,  I had a hard time understanding running out the clock when early in the game they went on a fourth down around the fifty yard line. That was a terrible  decision when your playing against Philip Rivers and you have the lead. You punt and hope to get the ball inside the 10 yard line. The logic there was to show the players I believe in you and then at the end of the half you decide you can't trust the players not to make a mistake. I think it would have been a far better coaching to punt the ball early in the game and trust the player to get into field goal range at the end of the half being the chargers would receive the ball in the second half.

You have the lead and your playing against one of the hottest teams in the league. You punt the ball and hope to get them inside the ten, I didn't like the call when they lined up and would not have like the call if they got the first down. you don't help your team win by bad coaching decisions in the long run.
