Look at strength of schedule and the wins. It's sort of a no brainer.

Defending a championship doesnt really mean anything in college because there is usually so much turnover year over year.  This FSU team didnt win a national championship.  This team isnt nearly as good as last years team was.

Thats sort of the inevitability of the SEC West though.  Doesnt matter how good these teams are, someone has to lose.  You say A&M is average but they only have 2 losses against the teams ranked #1 and #3 in the country.  Lets say Miss St knocks off Alabama, now the Tide will have 2 losses and that win doesnt look as good.  Bama and Ole Miss could take out Auburn and now the Tigers have 3 losses and that win doesnt look as good.  Arkansas seems to be getting better and better, they may take somebody out and all of a sudden that team wont look as good.

 

Every division needs 2 or 3 lousy teams so that the top tier all get wins to make their records look better.

Alabama is in the SEC and therefore had a tougher SOS than FSU, which is in the ACC. Why is it so hard to figure that out?

Do you think FSU would beat Miss St right now ? I think ranking teams as it sits now is best. Last year was a different beast. Different teams altogether.
