Here's one that fits my argument.  Came from the Saints/Falcons game this year.  Yay Google.

 

Scenario was Falcons ball, 3rd and 9 from the Saints 33 with no timeouts and 0:08 on the clock.  Matt Ryan threw an incomplete pass to Julio Jones, and they kicked a game tying FG to send it to overtime on 4th down.

 

Even less time than :12, huh? ....AND already much closer than a 55 yarder.

If it was as UNIVERSALLY correct as you suggest/ imply, then where was the questioning coming from, and why would there even be questioning in the first place that Tom had to answer???

He had to "defend" it because there are some airchair GM's/head coaches that dont understand football and need it explained to them.

bryant is 54% on 50+, aka a coin flip.

 

ATL doesn't have the players we have (specifically receivers and oline)

 

Both passes were incomplete because the D knew exactly what to expect. 

 

In the jags situation, you go for the FG 10/10 times.

The overtime was with several minutes left, so it's not an example.

 

The one you gave at the end of regulation was a good one.

 

Coughlin going for it shows that other coaches would kick the ball in that situation. Bradley is not alone in that decision making. 

 

Mike Smith chose to go for more yards. You guys are not along in your thinking.

 

Honestly, I feel like either way could be justified. That is why I (and others) have described it as a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation.

Or maybe we understand what the team can do(or cant do more like it) and that the odds of hitting a 55 yarder to win the game are far more favorable to trying to get a couple of more yards from a weak offense at the risk of fumble, penalty, tackle inbounds, on a defense that knows EXACTLY what you will be trying to do on 3rd down with no timeouts left.

It comes down to where your cutoff line is for the odds in that specific situation. A 55 yarder is still favorable odds in that situation to me. 60+ yards, I would have been saying he should have tried to get at least a couple more yards.

This is really silly, there is more then enough bone head time out management moves to be upset about.  The kick on 3rd down with rookie quarterback and wide receivers isn't a bone head move to be arguing.  IF 3 years from now with the same players Gus is making the same call, then argue it.

I promise you the odds of something going wrong from running an extra play are much higher than the 7% gained for moving the ball inside the 50.
