Andy Dalton gets a rap as a game manager because he doesn't have the strongest arm in the world, and he's surrounded by a great supporting cast that makes life easy for him. I think he's a much better QB than he gets credit for.

I'm not sure I'd put Stafford in that tier. He comes up with highlight reels because of Calvin Johnson. Even when he isn't throwing it to Johnson, the attention of the defense is directed at #81. He's got the dream scenario, with an all-time great highlighting a talented offense, and he's still completed less than 60% of his career passes for a QB rating of 83. Take Megatron away, and I believe that Stafford is a below-average QB.

He's a good game manager, and I mean that in the most positive way -- he's done a good job of running the Vikings' offense. I thought he was the most NFL-ready QB of this class coming out of college, and he can overcome his lack of an elite arm with his intelligence and anticipation. He got beat up last week against Detroit, but I'm not too concerned about the three INTs, as several were on tipped passes and the Lions' defense has frustrated a lot of QBs so far this season. I am a little concerned about his long-term health behind a struggling offensive line, though, as he has a smaller frame for the position.

Rivers leads the NFL in QBR at 87.1, and the Chargers are an impressive 5-1 (and their one loss happened when the defense surrendered two fourth-quarter TDs in Arizona in Week 1). Rivers has converted on 53.6 percent of third-down passes (third in the NFL), and his pocket awareness is second to none. His Week 3 performance against Seattle was about as well as you can play as a quarterback.

Brady is the third-fastest QB at getting the ball out of his hands this season (2.28 seconds), so the offensive line doesn't need to hold on for very long. Brady is one of the all-time greats, but like any QB he's bothered by bodies around him, and that offensive line wasn't doing a good enough job the first couple weeks. Against Cincinnati, 16 of Brady's 34 targets were to tight ends. Expect the emergence of Tim Wright beside Rob Gronkowski (who is returning to health) to do wonders for Brady and this offense.

He's got all the talent in the world and is putting it on display this season. Luck is one of the best QBs at calibrating his throws; he can stick it when he needs to, but you won't see him gunning checkdowns to RBs. He is still an underrated runner, climbs the pocket exceptionally well and has elite pocket awareness. Luck still makes more head-scratching throws (including seven INTs) than I'd like to see from a QB with his ability, but those should decrease in time. Put simply: The Colts win because Andrew Luck is on their team. He is raising the talent level on that roster.

He knows exactly when to get rid of the ball, and has a great sense for when the defense is in man coverage with corners not facing him and he can run. He showed that repeatedly against Washington in Week 5, with 11 carries for 122 yards.

Usually Sean Payton loves deep crossing routes, deep posts and seam routes, but those don't seem to be there this season. The O-line hasn't been as strong, and those routes take time to develop, but previously they'd go with an eight-man max protection. This team is averaging 5.2 yards a carry (second in the NFL), but is only eighth in rushing yards per game, at 133. Brees shouldn't be averaging 43.6 passes, especially with how that defense has played so far this season.

I believe it took him a couple of weeks to pick up new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo's West Coast system, but the book is out on Eli: He needs a strong offensive line, because pressure bothers him. And Philadelphia got pressure on him early and often. Eli is fourth-fastest in the NFL getting the ball out from snap to throw (2.29 seconds) and needs to continue that pace. Odell Beckham Jr. will be a key target for Eli in the short passing game, especially with Victor Cruz gone for the year.

It could be a long year for Ryan.

But mostly, Romo's improved decision-making is what stands out on tape. He was 10-of-15 on third down Sunday for 127 yards and two TDs against the Seahawks defense -- in Seattle, no less.

But what I want to see is more consistency. Gary Kubiak opened up the offense more against Tampa Bay in Week 6, with more three-wide receiver sets, and let Flacco throw the ball downfield. The Ravens converted all five of their red zone drives in Week 6 against Tampa Bay, including four passing TDs (they had only three red zone passing TDs entering the game).

<p style="font-size:12px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm still trying to figure out how he fit that TD pass in on "Monday Night Football" against the St. Louis Rams. It served as yet another reminder of just how big of an arm Kaepernick has -- he can make every throw. From watching him, I still think he needs to be more comfortable in the pocket, as opposed to escaping when his first read isn't there, but overall his mobility adds another dimension to his game and to the 49ers' offense that other QBs and teams simply don't have.

<p style="font-size:12px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Newton has been playing very well since coming back from injury. What I've noticed about Newton is that he's like a pitcher who has a very good fastball: He's going to get guys out, but you have to learn to live with the walks. Newton still doesn't calibrate the velocity of his throws very well, but I believe that the injuries will actually help his overall progression, as he has been forced to stay in the pocket more in his first couple of weeks back (although the Panthers used him on several designed runs against the Bengals last week). His completion percentage (61.7 percent) is the same as last season; let's see if he can increase that as he regains more mobility.

<p style="font-size:12px;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Dalton has an outstanding supporting cast around him (when everyone, particularly A.J. Green, is healthy), and has been sacked the fewest times of any starting QB in the league (twice). He still is making too many head-scratching throws for a QB with his experience, but ultimately his season will be defined by his play in the postseason. He got the contract he wanted, now he needs to deliver when it counts the most.
