Anger

He's consistently in the top 10 in most punting stats, hardly awful.

If your punter is a topic of conversation, that is a sign things aren't going well.

He's really not very good. which is absolutely ridiculous. He should be by far the best punter in the league.

9 times out of ten when he gets a chance to pin a team inside their 20 he kicks it in the endzone.

This.

Anger isn't the GOAT but Turk was downright horrendous and singlehandedly lost us two games.

Why doesn't he just punt out of bounds?  Even if he can't punt it as far that way, that'll be good because it won't be a touchback.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

I just posted this in another thread but it's relevant here too:

Matt Turk was a good punter. The reason he didn't work out is because Gene Smith tried to repurpose him for something he was not geared for. Turk was a hang time boomer. Gene Smith wanted a placement punter. Even though Turk TOLD Gene Smith he was a boomer, and even demonstrated that skill at his workout, Smith signed him anyway. That is why Turk got upset when the crowd booed him and I can't say I blame the guy. Turk's record with the Jags was a shining example of Gene Smith's ineptitude.

It takes a heck of a GM to screw up the punter position so badly.  Not only do we let go Podlesh, a very good punter who we had already spent a 4th rounder on, but we sign Matt Turk and mis-use him.  Then, to make up for that we get a "once in a generation punter" who should be a "weapon" and he's really just a regular punter.  I don't hate Anger, he doesn't cost us games, but most punters don't generally do that.  I think we should keep him until he's not good.

Seriously, I know we are just fans who don't know football, but Punter has got to be the easiest position to find at least a serviceable guy.  What a giant cluster we made it out to be.

Umm...maybe im lost here. I think I took a turn down insane lane but is this a thread about punting?

Maybe Gene hit it on the head drafting a punter in the 3rd round cause this is a thread about punting!!!! Who makes a thread about a punter? Are you frickin kidding me?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this. I was expecting Anger to pin people inside the 5 on directional kicks on a consistent basis when he was drafted. He has so many touchbacks, and sometimes can't even kick farther than the other guy. Not trying to complain. Just my assessment these last couple years.

There wouldn't be such a microscope on him if a 3rd round pick wasn't used to get him. Russell Wilson ended up going a few picks later.

I blame coaching.  If he had Bill OBrien as his head coach, EVERY SINGLE PUNT would be down inside the 5.   The fear of podium pounding would force him to do his job.   LOL.

Seriously, I thought last Sunday that he was being out kicked by the Browns punter on most kicks.   That being said, he isn't a bad punter, he's average and maybe a bit better than average.    Not what you want if you take a punter in the third round, but that is on Gene.    He gets the job done for us.

Its on Anger not being able to pin the returner.  He stinks!

Maybe he'll improve, maybe he is going something off the field because he hasn't been this awful in the time we've had him.  He's definitely regressed which is odd as a punter.  The good news is he has LOTS of room for improvement.

Absolutely.  With him stinking it up it may just be he will upgrade himself by returning to his normal or better play.  He is definitely in a rough patch, so once he works through it he can contribute to the team.

He's great at putting the ball in the end zone.   Another thing ..... when he does put it at the 2 why can't he put some air under it to give Todman a chance to run down the field and catch it !!!   At least we didn't draft Russell Wilson with that pick because we wouldn't have Bortles.
