What's the jury on Luke Joeckel?

Quote:Wasn't Boselli the one saying that Brewster was looking good in the pre-season though? Or was that Lageman? Or am I completely making stuff up? I can't remember, but I feel like either Boselli or Lageman lost some credibility this pre-season when they defended Brewster.

(Note: This isn't to say anything about Luke's game today; I didn't get to see the game. Had some other arrangements to attend to.)

Brian Sexton said Brewster played well after one game but I think that's about it.

I recall Lageman being high on Bowanko, not Brewster

It seems like poor play among top tackle selections is becoming pretty common around the league.

Jake Matthews started the season well but has struggled mightily the last two weeks.

Eric Fisher hasn't played well at all for KC.

Matt Kalil has been awful this year for Minnesota.

Eric Fisher has actually turned it up a notch the last few games.

That's why I say you shouldn't draft a lineman in the top 5. It's a position that doesn't affect the game that much individually yet the price is very high.

I am for drafting lineman in every year though. I guess I would start in the teens. Just don't think its ever warranted drafting a lineman in the top 10.

The offensive line is a unit. I would rather start 5 3rd rounders ir whateve. Keep drafting mid round o linemen and your hope is that you develop them.

Have not heard that. This was the last thing I saw on him.

Good for him if he is able to turn it around.

I re watched the game and Joeckel looked a little better than he "felt" while just watching the game live. Jurrel Casey ate a number of our lineman alive however.

After watching him closely the last few weeks I think my issues with him are that he seems to take a deeper drop than what I see the opponents LTs doing, which makes it look a little like he's getting bullied backwards. I don't know enough about LT play to say whether or not this is by design, just his style, or if it is in fact a problem but it's noticeably different IMO.

The other is that the rusher never seems "stuck" to him like I see the opposing LT do to our rushers.

Joeckel played a much better game against the Browns - compared to his previous performances...

The real test will be when he is matched up against Cameron Wake this week.

I expect there to be a couple of blunders by Joeckel, since he is still getting acclimated to the game - but I hope there isn't an exorbitant amount of penalties/whiffs.

Wake is REAL good.

I think Joeckel needs to beef up some more and gain some upper body strength...

He looks like he just gets abused by brute force...

I admittedly don't study LT's nor their technique, but coming out of college, he and Fisher were pretty equally matched and according to most draft experts could have gone either way. Everybody can't be wrong about Joeckel, right? Could it be he isn't getting sufficient coaching? I heard rumors Boselli was working with him as well. Is this true?

I will withhold final judgement until his "sophomore year"

defenders and defenses are just too big, too fast, and too complex.

The days of the dominant LT are over. You don't see Boselli's, Roafs, Walter Jones', etc...

It's just another reason why drafting a tackle in the top 5 is stupid.

He would have been a great 6th round pick

And the reason the Cowboys are so good?

Oh yeah it's drafting a Lt and the rest of the line in the first

per pff:

Luke Joeckel, LT: -5.0

Breakdown: Joeckel’s negative grade comes almost entirely in pass protection as he was beat on five of 48 drop-backs (1 sack, two hurries), with one hit negated by penalty and one not resulting in a pressure due to another blocker picking up the defender. While the number of times beat is concerning, how quickly he was beat is even the bigger issue.

Signature Plays: Jeremy Mincey beats Joeckel with speed to the outside for a sack early on (Q2 10:45), and then comes back later in the game (Q3 3:30) with an inside spin move for a hit.

I'm by no means an expert but it looks like to me that he lets guys get into his chest too often, and they can just push him back too easily.

Learn to read. I said in the top 5.

If you love a lineman, draft him 15th overall or something of 25th, but not 2nd

I have been a supporter of Joeckel since day one but he needs to get better fast. As you said he gets over powered to easily and has to often given up a soft edge.

From what I've seen so far I doubt he ever develops into a Joe Thomas/Tyron Smith type but I still believe he can become a very good LT for many years.

This is an line with what many of you guys have said before I know.

For the limited number of starts, he is solid
. The line has work to do but they will get better as they play and learn together.
And its official, he has entered the Derrick Harvey/Alualu/almost every Gene Pick zone where everyone ends up a bust. I know what solid means on this board (i.e. garbage and off the team in 2 years). If he was actually solid people would be saying hes a borderline pro bowler. And the beat goes on.

Yes, it's improvement, but it's Blaine Gabbert 2012 level improvement. - Pirkster

Quote:Boselli seems to have confidence that Joeckel will have long term success in the NFL as a right tackle or left tackle so I'll go on that. I don't think anyone is thinking Pro Bowl but maybe that is actually ok so he can stay long term and not require a $10m contract.

I like the way you think.

As for the Monroe comparison, I don't think he'll ever quite be at Monroe's level run blocking but I'm hoping he has room to grow in pass protection. He's certainly better than the likes of Mike Pearson, but I'm doubting he ever lives up to his billing of being a perennial Pro Bowler. I don't think the "bust" label is fair at this point because he certainly is, as someone else mentioned, serviceable, although I do wonder if perhaps Lane Johnson should have been the OT selected. Johnson was suspended the first four games for PEDs, however, he's generated rave reviews since his return as the Eagles starting right tackle.

Fisher was never an option for the Jaguars though, although Caldwell did say he'd have picked Joekel over Fisher is given that opportunity.
