Not shaken by Bortles dismal play

Quote:0% chance they take a QB first next year.

Might as well start whining now. :/

I'd wait for Driskel's pro day before making a comment like that

Peyton Manning didn't shine in his rookie year, he has to learn. Maybe we will need a new OC or maybe he needs to do better play calling. I don't understand why they throw the ball so much when Denard established the running game early.

The worst two things to happen to rookie quarterback expectations were Cam Newton and Ben Roethlisburger.

With our experienced, explosive WR's and top-ranked O-line, any QB should be successful on this team.

Quote:Exactly. Things were so bad with Henne we clamored to throw him in and we finally did. We can't just call him a bust because it looks bleak one game. We've seen the flashes and he has the will to compete unlike the other guys we had at that position.
This team is way better with Bortles playing. His main problem is that these teams are giving him looks he has never seen before. These guys can hide their coverage better than anything he saw in college. The team can move the ball now. This is basically welcome to the NFL for him.

Quote:I wasn't a fan of Bortles coming out of the draft, but you guys shouldn't give up on him yet. Very few quarterbacks come out of college fully formed and ready to compete at an elite level (like Andrew Luck), or step into a perfect situation (Russell Wilson), or benefit from an innovative scheme that defenses haven't figured out yet (Foles).

His two big problems are:

1. Terrible throwing mechanics. If you look at his body when he throws, his lower body is all wrong, like it's actually pointed the wrong way. Fixing his foot mechanics will help his accuracy tremendously. This is also part of the reason why he throws those wobbly balls, he's actually throwing against his body.

2. Struggles to read coverages. This should have been expected coming from UCF and not having played against top tier defenses in college. He'll get better at that. All quarterbacks do.

He has good tools, he just needs at least another year of development. Unfortunately for Gus Bradley, he doesn't have that time.
He's actually pretty accurate even with poor mechanics. Your second reason is definitely the truth though. He just needs to go through a full season to put it all together. An even larger problem is there are so many rookies on offense it just makes everything worse than it really is.

I am absolutely shaken. I don't have any historical evidence that shows the Jaguars can produce a franchise QB, nor do I see a QB on the field playing like a potential franchise QB. These past few games have been very bad even for rookie play. I want to wear the teal glasses like the homers do but unfortunately I can't.

He isn't winning games, he is costing us games.

He is inaccurate.

He is inconsistent.

He makes bad decisions.

Even for a rookie, a potential franchise QB would not be doing all four of those things.

Not taking shots but how many rookie qb's have you actually watched in your life time play? And I mean like 6-7 games worth at least.

I haven't read anything that has been written in this thread...  I'm just going off the title...  "Not Shaken BB5's Dysmal Play"

I still think that BB5 is going to be good.

But dude, you weren't shaken by his play?  Dude?  Really?

We should have won that game.  BB5 have them 14 points.

BB5 better be VERY SHAKEN by it.

He can't have games like this moving forward.

-Most Rookies struggle unless they come into a team that's already put together

-His accuracy is fine, especially for a rookie.  Andrew Luck's accuracy was 54% his first year.  Bortles is currently at 63%.  How much accuracy are you demanding of him?

-He's really not inconsistent.

-Sure he makes bad decisions, but that's what rookies do.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Well, I watch the Jaguars, so Leftwich and Gabbert come to recollection.

But thank you for attacking me instead of my argument.

Quote:You're kidding right? The best thing about this team other than the defense is that will have another top 3 pick. Hopefully we cut bait with Gus and get a real HEAD coach and a real QB prospect.

Nice to have you back the last couple of weeks. Where did you go after the Titans game, when he passed for over 300 yards? Vacation I'll bet. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because you don't have an agenda.

This guy just made a solid post and listed what is wrong and does not like about our rookie QB. The first thing the nut huggers jump on is to question someone's knowledge of the game. Don't be stupid and stubborn. The QB is not good.

To be more clear, my long term confidence in BB5 isn't shaken based on his performance the past 2 games.

Did I gloss over/fall asleep while scrolling to your posts? No way. Strange I'd do that, because I'm such a fan of your work. You have me on the edge of my seat.

Well I was asking because it sounds like you have only watched Gabbert and Leftwich play as rookies. This is very normal for rookie qbs no matter the team. I can promise you Those two never made half the plays Bortles has this year in their entire career.

Absolutely.  You have to look at what's surrounding him.  His pass protection was not good today, and his weapons aren't exactly elite.  All you have to do is look at Ryan Tannehill on the other side of the field and see that he's got garbage protection and really nothing to work with outside of Mike Wallace (who is limited in what he's good at) and Jarvis Landry (a rookie).

He'll get a lot better with time and experience.  He is NOT Geno Smith.

Maybe that is so, but do you know many rookie QBs who threw a 1:2 td:int ratio with a good portion of those interceptions being pick 6's and going to become a successful franchise QB?

There aren't many. Maybe the Jaguars get lucky though and have a QB that falls into that category. Then again, this is Jaguars football.

Now isn't the time to panic and do something stupid. We haven't got a real alternative anyway.

When we picked him we knew he wasn't ready to start. That's why they wanted to sit him on the bench for the season. And with a better veteran to lead the team we could have done that. But it wasn't possible so we have to push ahead with the cards we've been dealt.

Was today's defeat largely down to his poor decisions and lack of experience ? Of course it was. But that shouldn't come as a surprise and it doesn't mean he can't be very good in time.

Stick with him.
