Can he be really good with progression? Probably. We've seen the flashes.

 

Should he really progress that much from game to game in his rookie season? Get a grip. He has enough time to review tape, and then install and plan for the next team. The season as a whole is a learning season for him. Not game to game. In the offseason they'll be able to fine tune mechanics and everyone around Bortles should progress as well and we should see it out of the gate next season.

 

If not... then maybe you guys' complaints will hold water.

People don't really understand how to evaluate rookies period. Right now we are not looking for progression or consistency. This year we are trying to see if the guy has some ability and tools that we develop. Is he a guy that we can build a team around and if he shows some flashes of being able to play in the NFL at a high level.

 

Next year is when start to look for progression and some forms of consistency. I think him as well as the team will be much improved next year but it will still be some ups and downs. I really don't think true consistency in the qbs that are successful don't start to set in until around year 4-6. But we will continue to see that he is a guy we can build around that's for sure.

So basically, you've started a thread to whine about people using a Peyton comparison and let us all know that Bortles needs to cut down on his interceptions. Gotcha. I look forward to some more insightful commentary from you in the future. Maybe next time you can start a thread telling us how the DBs need to cover better or that our rookie WRs need to run better routes or that the LBs and safeties need to do a better job in the middle of the field.

Have you actually watched Derek Carr or are you just looking at his overall stat line? I like him and think has has been playing rather decent.  Honestly though he is not playing better than Blake and in a worse situation. The situations are similar we just have more upside for the future. He has only played one really dominant game. The others have been decent. He has more veteran wide outs than Blake has and I think that is something that isn't taken into account. He has played 3 more games than Blake and did get most of the first string snaps in the preseason so he had a little more preparations.

 

He has 3 more TD's and six less picks. Hes about 70 more passing yards than Blake. Blake has the better completion percentage. Carr is also very erratic in his accuracy so It could be a case of him throwing less catch able balls than Blake has from the games I've seen him play. 

 

I think this is a good comparison for Blake and to watch these two throughout there careers. Similar playing styles with huge upside taken a round apart. From what I've seen from both guys I'd take Blake because he has way better pocket presence.

You definitely put too much weight on completion percentage when we throw a lot of screen passes and dumpoffs.  Six less picks and has played three more games.

 

I'm definitely not calling Bortles a bust or anything of that nature, but I'm tired of hearing the rookie playing like a rookie, when I see Carr performing quite nicely in a similar situation.  I don't even see Bortles improving that much, the last game, some of those throws were just pitiful.

True, shows that he is a bit more conservative with the ball, but the way Blake is tossing up picks, we somewhat need that.  Of course this year is a pass for Bortles, but man, I've been fairly unimpressed.  I remember watching the bowl game of UCF vs Baylor, and the announcer kept talking about how he hoped Bortles returned for another year to clean up some things.  I think he was spot on with that.  But if Bortles doesn't end up being our franchise QB, I really don't ever want us to take a QB in the first round again.

Lol, I feel like you know what I meant, but wanted to be sarcastic instead, typical.  A lot is invested with a QB in the first round.  With Gabbert we had to wait 3 years to find out if he was the one.  In today's game, we're seeing QB's not taken in the first round doing pretty well.
