Is the SEC overrated?

Quote:Again, Missouri is 4-1 in the SEC with wins over some of those schools. Missouri lost to Indiana. Indiana has:

lost to Maryland by 22.

lost to Iowa by 16.

lost to Michigan by 24.

To say teams like Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee would "absolutely thrash" Maryland, Iowa, and Michigan just makes you sound like a blowhard. That sucks, because you've been gaining credibility back after that Cousins debacle. Don't lose it.

im just talking about this season. not years past, i hope there are some good sec vs big 10 matchups.... id lean heavily towards the SEC. impossible to try and guess what they would be right now though.

edit: also lets not take a credibility stab here..... cousins showed promise and turns out the dude cant help himself from sucking. how is that gardner to funchess "best qb to wr combo in the ncaa" working out?

Quote:Yes, I think the bottom SEC teams would give the middle Big Ten teams a run for their money. That's what I mean by teams could all "play up" a level.

Regarding the playoffs, I agree. I'll make a new thread.

actually, before things get too sorted out and matchups are even announced, would you give me loose rankings of the big 10 and the SEC so if they get matched up we can see how it plays out?

Quote:Nobody said FSU is playing bad football. The point is they play good football against teams in a weak conference. Their only tough opponent so far was Notre Dame. So how does anybody know FSU, which struggled against the Irish and almost lost that game, is better than any other team with a perfect record?
ND was undefeated and ranked in the top 5, of course they would play a close a game. Tell me what team in SEC has shown they are world beaters this year??? No one, they have all looked mediocre, except miss st, who has been showing the chinks in their armor lately. To sit there and tell me FSU would lose playing in the SEC west is silly based on what we have seen from every college team this year, not just the SEC.

God I cant wait until FSU makes it to the playoffs and beat a SEC team in the playoff, and another SEC for the National Championship!

I will Sunday. Will know more about MSU/OSU, NEB/WIS, and IOWA/MINN when those teams face off this weekend. For now, I'd say (in no order, I'll wait until Sunday for that):

Top tier:

Michigan St., Ohio St., Nebraska, Wisconsin

Middle tier:

Iowa, Minnesota, Maryland, Michigan

Bottom tier:

Rutgers, Penn St., Indiana, Illinois, Purdue

For the SEC, which I'm less familiar with, I'd say something like...

Top tier:

Miss St., Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU

Mid tier:

Missouri, Georgia, Texas A&M, Arkansas

Bottom tier:

South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

And to be clear, my stance has been:
  • Top of the SEC > Top of Big 10 > Middle of SEC > Middle of Big 10 > Bottom of SEC > Bottom of Big 10.
  • Every level is able of competing up a level, but not be the favorites to win or "absolutely thrash".

I guess you missed the word IF When did I say FSU would definitely lose to one of the SEC West teams?

Hail, you forgot Florida on your "bottom tier SEC" list.

Why is Penn State a bottom tier team? They were good enough against Ohio State to force overtime. I would put them in the middle tier based on that game.

Two bad years does not put Florida in the bottom tier of the SEC.

People seem to forget that FSU is gonna get everyone's best shot this year because they want to be the team that knocks off the defending champs.

I think Alabama is the best team in the SEC right now, and they're getting better. Hopefully we can get an Alabama-FSU matchup in the playoff final. The country deserves that matchup.

I was just listing the tiers based on this year, per Achille's request. Florida would probably go in the middle tier IMO.

Putting Mississippi State in the top tier and South Carolina in the bottom tier means you are only talking about 2014.

The problem with calling Florida a middle tier team is the Gators needed overtime to beat the Wildcats and Kentucky is a bottom tier team. That game looked to me like they are on the same level.

So let's call Kentucky a middle tier team.

Or let's look at overall body of work and not judge based on single performances.
