Is my computer dying?

Check to see if your fan screen is clogged with dust.  If it is, use compressed air or remove the screen and clean it manually.  Enough dust will prevent the fan from working at all.

Quote:If it is caked on then yes it can impede the movement, gpus usually have an idle temperature a little over 100 degrees, so this isn't like a soft dust ball, it's in a way cooked onto the heatsink. Then again these are all assumptions, your computer could be spotless on the inside (though I highly doubt it, if it hasn't been opened and cleaned in 4 years).

Wow I had no idea they could even get that hot. Because the video card works more often than not, I don't think the dust or dirt is caked on yet, although there must be a lot of it to overheat the CPU.

What is a heatsink?

Try looking for cat hair in the fan then.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Maybe one of you local people can go solve this crisis in person. I don't see it getting resolved here with good results.  :whistling:

But I'm on pain meds so what do I know.....

If I can't see a dirty fan, obviously I can't clean it. And I have no idea where Mom put her screwdrivers.

I told Mom we need to take the computer to Best Buy tomorrow to get it fixed. Good thing I don't have anything else to do before 7:30.

Be careful.  They'll probably try to sell you some things you might not need.  Good luck.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

We did this before. One guy said the problem is the power strip is old, but Mom did not like the one he recommended and returned it. Turned out it just needed a long break from the power cord.

I hope this is just a dirty fan. This is a bad time to be without Internet access if they have to replace something.

Did you all miss me when I did not have a computer?

DF was right about the video card. There was not enough dust to restrict the fan's mobility. Mom killed the computer when she unplugged it. She learned later it was five years old.

Because the computer was dead on arrival, the Geek Squad had to transfer all of my files from the hard drive. That is why I still had no computer three days after Mom bought a new one.

That is like saying computers can't get sick even though they get viruses all the time.

But they don't get living viruses they get digital viruses which are different. So your computers doesn't get sick it gets slowed down with incorrect data or harmful data. Do you give your computer medicine and rest to get better? Of course not because it's not sick!

Don't believe me try turning off your computer for 10 days so it can rest and see if the virus goes away.
