This front office definitely scouted the guy and felt he was a player who had the potential to be a building block that they could use for the foundation of the new approach.  He proved them right, and he's been rewarded.
They also thought Dekoda Watson and Toby Gerfail was going to be big time players, Marks was not signed to a big deal until AFTER he produced here don't forget that.

Quote:I think I already know the answer, but I have to ask.

If you owned an NFL team with a similar history to the Jags, how long would you give the new coach you hire before bringing in a new one? A year and a half? Two years? One year?

If you were running the show, how long would you give the GM and the coach to turn it around before firing them?
If it was the same situation as this I'd give Caldwell 3 years of fail then tell him to fire Gus and get another coach. If after that fourth year we still didn't make the playoffs, he's gotta go too.

C'mon, dude. You're smarter than this.  Watson, Marks, Miller and Ball were signed to "prove-it" deals.  Three of them did exactly that.

Gerhart was signed to a slightly better deal that was carefully structured to protect the team's cap.  If he turns out to be gone or just a spell-back, it's no major loss.

They didn't go after top tier free agents in '13 or '14  by design - but they will likely examine all of those options carefully this year now that they've acquired what will be three drafts worth of young talent.

It's really simple to see the plan of adding young talent first  - THEN supplementing it with higher priced free agents.

If they actually thought what you suggest, they wouldn't have signed them to "show me" type deals just as Marks was when they brought him in.  You do understand that almost every free agent this team has brought in was basically being signed to an extended tryout, right?  Specifically, neither Watson or Gerhart were signed with the expectation that they were going to be world beaters.  If they became that, great.  If not, no big deal.  Their impact on the cap is minimal.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

We're a year and a half into the process, so even by your standards, you're being ridiculous.

How the hell I'm being riduculous by saying we suck? I didn't at one time say fire anybody yet. You're always hollering about everybody else reading comprehension is subpar but yours is [BLEEP]. If you like what you see then that's cool for you, but why do you feel the need to fight a battle of a billion dollar company like some superhero? You come on here and cape up and bring stupid lame witty comments when anybody doesn't like the direction of this product. Stop being in love with this and give that same affection to your family.

You should take your own advice since this team is making you so miserable. My reading comprehension is just fine.  You're not coming out directly and demanding someone be fired, but your incessant whining shows a clear indication of where your mindset is at.

I'm all for laying down criticism when it's warranted.  I think one can be a fan and still put aspects of the team on blast, so long as one is trying his/her best to be objective and honest.

With that said, I honestly don't see how anyone can jump on Caldwell based on some free agency misses.  As FBT and NYCJags have been saying the misses that Caldwell are not crippling the team.

Let me describe a good example of a crippling miss...  The David Garrard contract...  Remember after the '07 year of magic we gave him a hefty contract and shortly thereafter realized he would not be the answer.  We were then stuck with him and the contract for 3 more years like an albatross around our necks.

What we are seeing with Caldwell so far his talent acquisition, talent evaluation, and talent elimination.  All of which has been done with an eye on the future with deals that are not costing us very much.

There may come a time when Caldwell's decisions begin to show up as a liability for the team, but at this point, I don't think you can say that.  He's been a positive for us so far.

Lets not sugar coat anything.  The team sucks and in a battle with Oakland for worst team in the NFL.  Yes the roster was bad when this new regime took over but is it really any better?  Yes it's younger but dont' know about better.

All I know of this team has won 5 games in a season and a half.  Normally there is progress shown when a team is improving.  1-9 and just getting our butts handed to us on the world stage breeds 0 confidence.

We should be winning more games because this regime has had 2 offseasons to work with.  The team is going backwards.

To say "let's not sugar coat anything" would imply that someone is actually doing so, and I haven't seen that at all here.  I think everyone recognizes the team is bad, so you're regurgitating the obvious.  You may not agree with the process, but it is what it is, and nothing is going to change.  If it isn't reaping positive results by the end of year 3, a new direction will be charted.
