Zach McCrite, a former sports talk radio host here in the Louisville area and current post-game host for the St. Louis Rams, recently spoke to an NFL agent about Bridgewater’s pro prospectus.



“He’s got the swagger and the brains of an RG3,” the agent tells McCrite. “He’s number one overall among all quarterbacks and then there’s a considerable drop off after that. Charlie Strong loves him and NFL people really respect Charlie Strong.”

Not sure I agree with the RG3/brains comparison. More like Alex Smith when it comes to dissecting the defense and making the smart play/right read.

I have been believing that for a few weeks, nothing Mariota has shown makes me think he is remotely close to Bridgewater as a passer.

The 6-foot-4, 212-pound Mariota is the physical prototype for today's up-tempo offenses. Possessing a combination of agility, straight line speed and a rocket of a right arm, Mariota has earned comparisons from scouts to San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.


Frankly, the Oregon signal-caller is further along than Kaepernick was at a similar point in his collegiate career at Nevada.Unlike Kaepernick, whose baseball-like delivery played a role in his lasting until the second round, Mariota is technically sound. He has an efficient set-up, setting his feet quickly, keeping his shoulders square and delivering the ball with a tight, over-the-top release. Best of all, the football simply explodes out of Mariota's hand.


There is no denying that Mariota -- like previous Oregon quarterbacks -- is significantly aided by the Ducks' spread offense. Creative scheming and the Ducks' talent at the skill positions routinely leaves Mariota wide-open receivers from which to choose from. As such, scouts are left to largely ignore his 68.5 completion percentage and instead appreciate Mariota's uncommon ball-placement, which gives his targets the opportunity to run after the catch.

Yes. It is his fantastic ball placement on screens and swings that leads to it. Not the Oregon offense around him.

I'm not trying to do anything. I like Bridgewater and I like Mariota too as pro prospects. I'm willing to explore and be open minded about the 2 best draft eligible QBs this year.


This time last year Geno Smith was a sure fire top 10 pick. Then the losses started piling up and his stock started tumbling too. Its too early in the college season to say for sure Bridgewater or Mariota aren't headed down the same path. Mariota hasn't played against a real NFL type defense yet (but Stanford is coming up soon) and Bridgewater won't face a real test THIS YEAR until bowl season.


It doesn't hurt to continue doing research on both prospects and even expanding that to all QBs draft eligible right up until the draft. That way you don't look like a fool who pigeonholed yourself for the first prospect you saw if he doesn't continue playing at a high level.
