unrelated by i saw that some people also think that it is a possibility that richt leaves georgia for the nebraska job and i thought that was kind of crazy, but i could see the argument for it, his job security at georgia cant be very high right now.

What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is agoin' on here???

With the $$$ going into these college football programs these days and the national exposure to various teams, the amount of elite coaching jobs in the NCAA has increased exponentially over the past 30 years.   Once could argue that any head coaching job in the SEC is an elite job.  Even programs like Kentucky and Vanderbilt are pumping $$ into their football programs because they understand the return on investment that comes with winning.

Whether someone has a liberal, or conservative viewpoint, a authoritative figure should not lock a thread for the sole purpose to get the last word in all the while prohibiting someone else from being able to respond.

They still think they are an elite job. But they have not been for 20 years. Osborne used to be able to come to Florida and recruit players in the 80's and 90's. Those days are long gone.

Those teams ran the Option, so he could get the non-pro set guys like Tommy Frazier, but that offense has gone out style in Florida and dried up that pipeline.

I keep having to tell people that there is more money in the nfl.  People I know keep thinking they can get WHOEVER THEY WANT because UF has money growing on trees.  It's just not true.  UF has a budget.  Jim Harbaugh is not going to make more money at UF.

Doubt he was ever going to leave Ole Miss. He was born in Oxford, grew up in Mississippi. They gave him his first college job. He was smart to use the Gator job as leverage to get a big deal with the Rebels.

I assume the thinking is that each coach has a value. Freeze may have been a great option at 4.2 million but another candidate might have been option #2 because they knew he would cost more.

Well when Alabama and many other schools are willing to spend more money than your school, you aren't going to get that coach your school thinks they deserve.  Everyone keeps saying Florida is an elite job....its only elite if you're willing to pay for an elite coach.

 

The school will lose more money in the coming years in tickets, merchandise, etc. if they choose not to spend money and get a good coach.  Three more seasons like the past couple years will dramatically reduce people in the stands and their relevance in the football world.  

 

I have a feeling Foley can find some money in the budget if a winning football program can continue bringing money in the school.  Fyi, Foley only makes 1.2 million.  I was surprised he didnt make more.

According to this link, the average salary in the NFL for a coach is about 4.8 million. That isn't far off from what Florida offered freeze, if 4.2 is the correct figure.


Freeze isn't really a big time name either so that's why I'm sure they tried to get him at a bargain price.

I thought so too...just looked that up.  It says max bonus $50k.  He's still the highest paid in the country.

exactly, there isn't more money there.  the AVERAGE salary in the NFL is just as much as some of the highest paid coaches in the nation.

 

and Harbaugh isn't exactly pleased with his situation.  any NFL team would gladly outbid whatever college wants him.  Harbaugh is a hot coach right now.  if he goes back to college, he's taking a pay cut.

I don't expect UF to spend Saban money on a guy who certainly isn't as qualified.  What coaching prospect is on Saban's level?  UF doesn't need to overpay to get a good coach.

 

The only guy they should break the bank for would be Spurrier to come back.  Or Chip Kelly.  Both of which are not coming to UF.

There are other guys out there worth the money. The thing about college vs the pros is the amount of power and control a coach can have. Its not always about money, especially for a guy like harbaugh. 5.5 mil in college vs 6 mil in the pros isn't a huge deal at this point in his life.

Who said pay them Saban type money?  There is a large difference in what they are offering and what Saban makes.  If you are hiring a coach now, you better believe he can bring you to the promise land....if thats the truth, then you have to be willing to pay him.....or you're getting another Muschamp.

everybody is saying this.  that UF can get whoever they want because they can outbid anybody.  It's just not true.

 

Hiring a good coach does not mean you have to pay him max money before he actually proves he can make it work.  How much did they give Meyer at first?  Was it top five coach money?

 

It's not as easy as people think to get well-established coach, because it's that much more difficult to pry them away from their current team.  UF, like they have in the past, will end up with a guy who is looking for an upgrade from their current situation.  He wont be proven like Spurrier or Harbaugh, but a guy who has big potential and COULD BE the next great coach.  That doesn't require Saban money.
