Is Taking Mariota Really Off The Table?
|
So is this what we have to look forward to this offseason?
The Jaguars should take Mariota because they didn't take Roethlisberger in 2004? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:I doubt Caldwell care about who the Jaguars took in 2004 Who they passed on in 2004 isn't the lesson to be learned.
Quote:Who they passed on in 2004 isn't the lesson to be learned. There is no lesson to be learned.
If the Jags have a franchise QB grade on him, I hope they take him and let the two battle it out. We need a franchise QB much more than anything else, something we've arguably never had. Do whatever it takes to get "the guy", then recoup whatever value you can. Our track record in Round 1 is God awful anyway, I'm willing to take the shot. Of course all this is caveated based on their feeling on the two. Hopefully Bortles is the guy and hopefully they're right. I just can't stomach missing out the opportunity to draft a franchise guy if we don't already have one
Quote:So is this what we have to look forward to this offseason? (and Rodgers in 2005) But the deeper point being (unless they are bowled over with a trade offer) they are better off taking the QB here. You keep taking one until it becomes almost 100% apparent that you don't have any QB issues/ questions. I like Bortles, and still think that potential is there but am I 100% sold? Or even 75% sold? No I am not. Part of that is that I think Bortles has been harmed by a bad OC. I'd say that I'm 60/ 40 on Bortles right now, and 60% is not enough to keep me from drafting what could be a better QB. Whats the worst that could happen? That one of them is a backup for us? Look at what Henne makes already, salary-wise. The new rookie pay scale makes it less of an issue regarding salary. Yeah, I'm in favor of taking a QB like Mariota at our pick if we can't make any trades getting en masse of picks in return. We show less advertisements to registered users. Quote:SDR, you're dense man. How dare I not want to take another QB in the first round
Quote:(and Rodgers in 2005) Actually the worst that could happen is neither ends up a franchise QB and Leonard Williams, Randy Gregory and Amari Cooper end up as perennial Pro Bowlers. Then the lesson becomes don't take two QB's in the top 5 in consecutive years? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I think for a QB, specifically mariota, there will be trade opportunities if he is there when we pick. That's best case scenario.
I think if there aren't, this might be one of those situations where you draft him and then hold him hostage, try to move him or bortles when a team realizes the draft didn't play out how they wanted. Edit: just for the record, I personally really like bortles. These are just hypotheticals.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

I don't think it's at all bad to have two potential franchise QB's battle it out for the starting job. There's trade value in the guy who loses out, as evidenced by the Rob Johnson trade to Buffalo, which got us the 9th pick in the 1998 draft. Does the name Fred Taylor ring a bell?
Quote: Especially with the way that scenario played out... Quote:Duhhh, yes.......they did for Luck. What would you suggest? Eye color? Shoe size?Colt Brennan must have been the #1 pick in 2008 then, right? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Take a guy with the third pick to flip him for the ninth pick. Good idea. Quote:So is this what we have to look forward to this offseason? This is why you're dense. Good idea. There's a little more to it that that, dontcha think? Or do you think? Quote:I agree, he is better than Kaepernick. Significantly. My point was - I'm so tired of hearing that used any time a QB is projected to be at the top of the draft - i.e., every year. You telling me you know Mariota is going to have the career of Roethlisberger? And you know Caldwell is not taking a QB - it doesn't work that way, and there is a reason for that. This team is not one back-up QB away.

Quote:Take a guy with the third pick to flip him for the ninth pick. Good idea. Rob Johnson was a fourth round pick in 1995. The Jags received the 9th pick in the 1998 draft when they traded him to Buffalo. Good deal, no?
Quote:My point was - I'm so tired of hearing that used any time a QB is projected to be at the top of the draft - i.e., every year. I have no doubt there will be dozens of more threads just like this one up until the draft. The team isn't taking Mariota or any other QB.
