People can blame the scheme all they want but like you've mentioned, it works many other places just fine. In the past, now, and in the future the ZBS will work in the NFL.


This team flat out doesn't have the talent right now to be successful in any scheme. Whether your running Zone/Gap scheme your guys need to beat the guys across from them and it's not happening right now.


Do people really believe if we were running nothing but gap scheme stuff that we would all of sudden be the 2007 Jaguars again? Gap scheme would turn Joeckle, Beadles, Bowanko, Linder, Pazstor/Young into guys like Manuwai, Meester, Mo. Williams, etc.


Those guys were simply better than what we have now. It wasn't because of the scheme, it was because they were just better offensive line period. I hope to the football gods that what we have now gets better because they are still young and have a long future ahead but come on guys let the scheme thing go.


If you want to blame the coaching and playcalling then I'm all for that but by using a blanket statement like "its the ZBS" is just ignorant. The Texans showed us last week that the scheme works. They just have some Dudes on their team that we not.

This should end the thread because it's true.  But unfortunately, it won't.  Fans love to place blame around here.  Carry on, thread.  Carry on.

One thing that stuck out to me was just how badly a few of them are at cut blocking.  I think 3 hits/sacks came off a defender who was supposed to be cut but our line guy just whiffed completely.  I saw it happen with Linder, Young, and Bowanko.

 

Often (ie. pretty much always) when an OL cut blocks, it's supposed to be a quick pass by the QB. I remember at least one glaring example where Joeckel went to cut a defender, but Bortles pump faked and just had no idea that the pressure was coming.

He's actually a breathe of fresh air.  He holds his own on nearly every play and it's fun watching him block his guy 5 yards out of the play at times.

I dont know enough about schemes to know if thats the problem but watching the one on one battles show that we need a LT, RT, LG and C in that order. I do tend to believe a dominant LT will make a huge difference in allowing the rest of the oline to double rushers. I dont think Joekle is worthless though, maybe a move to LG is in his future.

It's easier to sell the idea that Bortles is the one failing because we all know we HAVE to stick with him for the next 3 years.  If they start placing blame on the blockers, then that means they actually have to do something this offseason.

Oh ok, you think this Oline is good?  are you watching the games?  Bortles is under constant duress.

This idea that "Bortles just needs to get the ball out quicker" is total non sense.  If everything is a quick throw, you aren't going to get anywhere as an offense.  I'd also advise you to watch the actual good QBs in this league (Romo, Rodgers, Brady) and see how a pocket forms around them, giving them time to scan the field when the first read isn't there.  In fact, what Bortles does best is improvise.  So telling him to be "quick-throw Joe Quarterback" is telling him to be something he isn't.

 

Telling Bortles to "get the ball out" and this is his fault for getting hit almost every play is like telling him to throw his first read or throw it away.  Yes, that's a great recipe for success.
