You're kidding.   People can't figure out why we didn't invade Saudi Arabia?   Invade Saudi Arabia???   They are our allies.   That's like saying we should invade Canada. 

 

And the USSR was our ally in WWII. You do what you have to do.

It's not about being allies. The US will turn on an ally with little compunction over it. Look at Saddam Hussein if you want a good example of it.

 

The reason the US did what it did is because of entrenched economic interests.

 

It's the same reason the USA didn't make a real break from foreign oil 40 years ago and start putting up wind turbines and solar panels across the nation.

 

The USA does things that keep the money flowing in the direction of the oligarchs.

Don't shoot the messenger. A lot of people thought, and still think, Saudi is to blame for the funding of 9/11 terrorists and because of that we should have invaded them. I don't know one way or the other but it looks like they could have and if they did then shame on them.

 

And just because a country calls themselves our ally doesn't mean if given the circumstances they wouldn't stab us in the back. Sometimes I think 99% of our foreign policy is the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" mentality. They're not really our friends but because they're the enemy of our enemy then we accept them as a friend.

It begs the question, what would be the military objective of an invasion?   Install a friendly regime?   They are already a friendly regime.   Who are we  supposed to kill?   What are we supposed to destroy?   I hope the next time someone suggest this to you, you would ask them these questions.

Hey, I didn't say it made sense, I'm just sharing what I've heard over the past 10+ years. The people you kill and destroy are those responsible. We don't know who exactly that is (outside of bin Laden) so we went to Afghanistan since bin Laden and al Qaida were so strong there.


Some things make sense at the time that, when reflecting on years later, don't make much sense at all.
