Typically in the "real world", a lateral move doesn't put you further ahead and in many cases it sets you back because it puts you at the low end of the totem pole.  In something like football, its all about getting to the bigger program and turning that team/defense/offense around and proving yourself.  That is what leads to better coaching jobs and $$$.
