My Beef With Leonard Williams
|
What's up guys... sorry I've not been around recently, it's been very busy here in Hindustan. I will preface this by saying that I haven't looked at Williams in depth yet.
He's looked at as the top defensive talent, and possibly the best overall player in the draft. He's six and a half, three hundred pounds. Strong and fast. His statistics sing his praise as well. He might well be the best talent next year, but I would possibly take issue with the Jags taking him. Why? Because of his scheme fit. Our defensive line scheme is pretty unique because it basically involves one of every type of defensive lineman excepting a 43 end - a 34 rush OLB (Clemons), a 34 nose (Miller), a 43 tackle (Marks), and a 34 end (Big Red). So, of these roles, which could Williams fit? Theoretically all of them except the LEO. But look at it this way... Marks is playing at a Pro Bowl level, he's young, ascending, and has a new contract. The same could be said of Miller, who's only playing a little worse than Marks. That leaves the 34 end... currently manned by Red Bryant, an aging veteran with knowledge of the scheme and excellent production. But why not add in a talented youth like Williams? The answer is The value of the position. Our 34 end is supposed to crash down along his side of the line, take up blockers, and close holes. It's a good job, an important job, but not one you spend a top five pick on. It would almost negate Williams' natural pass rushing ability and limit him to being a run stuffer. Some people say he's like JJ Watt in that you can move him around the defensive line... which I suppose you could do, although you'd be taking a talented lineman off the field wherever you sub him in. Now this isn't to say I dislike Williams. If he meets the hype he will be really good. I just think our needs can be satisfied by equally excellent talent at the top of the draft. I've scouted Randy Gregory and he looks like a home run, while Brandon Scherff could make a nasty bookend with Luke. Just some thoughts, I'd be interested in hearing your opinions.

May be just me, but I'm not all that super impressed with Williams like everyone else is. He's talented, no doubt about it, but I just see him getting "stoned" too much during his tapes. He makes a play or two and the announcers go crazy over it. I definitely need to see more, but I'm more impressed with Shane Ray at the moment.
Which leads me to what you said OP. I don't know where he would fit on the line. I guess he would be moved around. He could fill in Bryant's spot on passing downs and he also could play in Clemons spot, but our pash rush would lack a bit. I believe Gregory and Ray fit us better as well, especially Gregory.. Tall, long, athletic, and fast... Obviously they will get to know him better as a person during combines and stuff to see where his heads at, both those guys are better fits, including Vic Beasley as well. Gotta see more of Williams.
Shock the world
If Williams is as talented as he appears to be, you adjust your defense to his elite strengths.

Remember when the Giants were still drafting DEs in the first round despite having pro-bowlers at the position? DL is a spot you can never have too many good players.

I do question where he'd fit on our defense. My biggest concern is with his speed getting off the line. Not sure if he's hurt or they scheme it that way on their defense but it's so blatant. I think if that's a non-factor he's a pretty talented guy.

What he lacks in getting off the line he makes up with shedding blocks and getting to the ball. As far as the OP...besides Marks, what talented pass rusher are you worried about taking off the field when you move Williams around? If he's an all around player like Watt, who doesn't want that? Its fine...knowing this staff they just line him up as the fifth DL and give his new position some different name that causes everyone to hype it up for no reason.

X2. I think Williams is superb but I love what I see out of Randy Gregory too. If we really want to focus on the rush, then Gregory is absolutely fine by me.
The man can literally line up at any position and be dominate there. I guess a pass rusher is more flashier and the chicks dig flash but if he's there I hope we grab him.

This dude is also a great leader. He's not a slacker and has a good motor for someone his size. I like players who do their jobs well and on top of that make others job easier. That's him.
The only issue I have with him is he told the raiders he wants to play for them. Granted this might have been back when the raiders owned the first overall pick.
Remember when people said we shouldn't draft JJ Watt because he doesn't fit Del rios defense?
Not saying Williams will be watt but if he's the best player then pull the trigger
