Looking to Draft Day

#21

Quote:I like Thompson but he would be a terrible fit at OTTO. Too small for that role. Someone like Bud Dupree would be a better fit there.

Shaq's almost the exact same size as Geno Hayes. He'd fill the role just fine.

Geno Hayes: 6-1, 226

Shaq Thompson: 6-1, 228

That video is amazing. I think some of those players he was up against we're trying to run away from him !

There will be lots of offensive linemen available in this draft, but we will have the opportunity to get the very best. Why pass up that opportunity when it is clearly our area of greatest need ?

With our first round pick, we should take the best player available.  We have all the other picks, plus free agency, to fill needs.   With a top 5 pick, needs should go out the window.

Brandon Scherff is very similar to Brian Bulaga of the Packers, who just happens to be an UFA this year. Bulaga is not an All-Pro ORT, but he is a mauler in the run game. With 60+ Million in cap space, the Jags can afford to overpay a little bit to get an ORT that is the equal of the best OT coming out in this years draft class. So why not sign Bulaga and then draft Shane Ray or Randy Gregory and upgrade both lines?

I don't think Hayes is the prototype though. The two guys before him were Laroy Reynolds and Dekoda Watson, both play in the 240's. Irvin plays that in Seattle and is 250.

Need has to come into the equation. Otherwise we'd be drafting Mariota.

And while comparisons between different positions are hugely subjective, you could argue that Scherff would be a bigger "difference maker" than Ray or Gregory to our team.

But you are of course right to say that Free Agency can fill needs and we'll have a better idea which way we are heading once DC starts to make his moves.

Haven't seen to many of his games, but is it just me or does this video have him up against mostly smaller guys like LB's and DB's that he is destroying?

I would enjoy a video of him against mostly DE. I'll try looking for one.

I watched the Nebraska game to see him matched against Gregory but Gregory did not play due to injury. Not really sure he faced any one else of note. They didn't play Ohio State this year, so he didn't face Bosa.

True, Watson has 10-15 pounds on Thompson. Hayes has been alright in the role at the size he's playing at though.

Thompson may not be the ideal size but he's a hella good linebacker and is great in pass coverage. His ability to play both ways shows his knowledge of the game and his natural athleticism.

I like him as a mid-late first rounder, but I think he's going to be put at a higher value by some teams. I've seen him projected as a high first rounder on some sites and just outside the first on other sites.

One of the biggest problems with the o-line this year was too much lack of experience. I think we would be better served if we can shore up the line with some veteran help in FA.

My guess is that they will draft someone in the defensive front 7 with their first pick.

Might the Jags consider Michael Roos of the Titans as a potential ORT Free Agent signee. He certainly has the experience and he might come cheap.

I dont think cheap when protecting their franchise guy. They went after Alex Mack last year, expect that this year whoever he is.

No one is safe.

Quote:Remember when Jungle Cat was flamed for banging the table for a lineman last spring. Our D line can survive without taking a fresh body first round. Bortles needs more protection, poor kid hasn't had much of a chance. Although Caldwell has been awesome with his 4round and later picks, maybe we should look for one then.
Jungle Cat was flamed not because he wanted to draft on OL. He was flamed because he wanted us to draft Jake Matthews instead of "Biff Bortles" as he was calling him. Flaming well deserved.

I could see the Jags spending heavy on the offensive line in free agency. We need more veterans on offense, and more youth/depth on defense. Caldwell always game plans around the strengths of the draft. Last year, it was an offensively - strong draft, which is why we ended up with so many rookies on offense. Is the 2015 draft a better draft defensively? Seems like there is depth at DL.

I agree completely.  This is where value is just way too high of a factor.

Mariota will be gone when we pick.  I think with a high 1st pick, it has to be BAP, just too much to lose, and too much for the other teams to gain by not going that route.

Watching these videos, it's like he enjoys making the others look silly.  I know it's an error to make judgement based on highlight reels where everyone looks like a future all-pro (except Gabbert and Harvey.  Still scratching my head), but damn this kid looks good!

Even though a lot of times he did go against smaller players - the fact that he destroys them when he can is good.

those type of hits accumulate and wear down the defense.  A player that gets his face pushed into the ground and gets knocked on the ground repeatedly isn't going to be as effective later in the game.

Give me this type of lineman any day of the week as compared to these left tackles that "dance" but can't hurt a housefly, like Joeckel.

He was flamed because he was a troll. And he wanted Matthews, who has been terrible.

Man how nice it would be to have an OL with a mean streak again.  This guy has that attitude and I'll bet he would even help Bortles up!
