***OFFICIAL Lions vs Cowboys Gameday Thread***

Quote:I could tolerate them calling pass interference, and I could tolerate them not calling pass interference,  but to call it, then announce it, and then reverse it without explanation, surely the head honchos at NFL headquarters can understand what that looks like.

It looks like the game was fixed.

They really need to issue a plausible explanation, because this stinks to high heaven.
That's what pissed me off more than anything. Made absolutely no sense, and to top it off, Dez runs on the field to argue and doesn't get penalized. This game reminds me that the regular refs are not that much better than the replacements from 2 years ago

Quote:I watched replays on NFL.com and paid special attention to Brandon Pettigrew's left arm. He clearly did not push off. His left hand was resting on Anthony Hitchens' right shoulder.

Naturally, Pettigrew had nothing nice to say about it. Albert Breer tweeted, "Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew on the call: "I didn't get an explanation. It was ridiculous. . . . He ran through me."

I will be shocked if the officials are not downgraded for this crap and hope Pete Morelli never works during the playoffs again.

Wow - you win tonight's Drama Queen of the Evening Award - and it was a tough call. Like there haven't been hundreds of iffy calls during NFL games. But THIS one's fixed?

The only ones I want to hear crying in their beer are the gamblers who lost money - and that would be the Cowboy fans, because they didn't cover. And since the disputed call went their way and they still "lost" what's the big deal?

The sun's not yellow, it's chicken.

Lions fans lost too because they picked Detroit to win.

I am not the one who believes that game was fixed. But I really don't see how it could be a tough call.

Now we have an explanation for picking up the flag on NFL.com:

Quote:<p style="font-family:arial, verdana, helvetica;color:rgb(34,34,33);">"The back judge threw his flag for defensive pass interference," (referee Pete) Morelli told (reporter Todd) Archer, via a pool report released by the Cowboys. "We got other information from another official from a different angle that thought the contact was minimal and didn't warrant pass interference."

<p style="font-family:arial, verdana, helvetica;color:rgb(34,34,33);">

<p style="font-family:arial, verdana, helvetica;color:rgb(34,34,33);">The other official Morelli referred to was head linesman Jerry Bergman, who thought the play was "face-guarding," according to Morelli. Face-guarding is illegal in college football, but not in professional football.

<p style="font-family:arial, verdana, helvetica;color:rgb(34,34,33);">http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...-card-game

<p style="font-family:arial, verdana, helvetica;color:rgb(34,34,33);">

<p style="font-family:arial, verdana, helvetica;color:rgb(34,34,33);">Why on Earth would Bergman believe the contact was minimal? Brandon Pettigrew would not think Anthony Hitchens ran through him if it was just face-guarding.

Quote:Redsky's analysis is how the entire media is gonna play this one. While obvious that that one play really was the hinge of the entire game, the cowherds of the media will defend the entire thing using the Redsky argument...

It stinks, but such is life

I think the call should be addressed. I think it was shady, and I dislike the indecisiveness on the official's side.

That being said, Detroit still had many chances to win and they weren't able to capitalize. How about the ten yard punt right after that call? A lot of people are over-dramatizing this moment just because they hate the Cowboys.

I've thought about it, and I have a theory as to why this one was bungled.

First of all, these refs are like an all star squad.   It's not a crew that's worked together all season.

It used to be, when someone threw a flag, the referees got together face to face and hashed it out.   That gave the other refs time to disagree.   But now, they have those earpieces and microphones and that's how they communicate with each other.   It supposedly speeds up the game.

So this time, one guy throws the flag, and tells the head ref over their new communication system, pass interference on # whatever.   The ref announces it.   Then he gets word from another official that they need to pick up the flag, so he picks it up.   (That's the official explanation so far.)

The problem is, in the past, the refs would get together in a huddle and hash it out.  So the fans would see there was some kind of disagreement.   Now, in the interest of speeding up the game, they don't have to do that.   The fans can't see what's going on.

This introduces another problem.  The fans are now free to speculate on who spoke to the head referee in his earpiece.   Was it another official?   Someone in New York?   Jerry Jones?   A big time gambler?

I think in the interest of modern technology and speeding up the game, the fans are now in the dark about what happened.

The Lions said that too, but for all I know they could just be afraid of getting fined. One player said the course of the whole game changed after that penalty. It was like the penalty reversal caused the Lions to suck.

The problem with that theory is Pete Morelli admitted he should have huddled up with the other officials to hash it out. Also, it does not explain Morelli's failure to explain the penalty reversal when he said it's fourth down.

The fact that they don't work together every week is not an excuse for the head linesman waiting until after the penalty was announced to tell Morelli he disagreed with the back judge. These guys have to work for at least five years to be eligible for playoff assignments. I think based on Morelli's explanation, both he and the head linesman need to be downgraded.

I can see the headline now.

Former NFL official Pete Morelli admits to fixing NFL playoff Game.

Morelli-The call on the field was PI on the defender, I purposely went to another side judge to bait and cause him to get a guilt trip admitting he saw something different.

Bad call, but the Lions had plenty of opportunities to win that game.  If I am Caldwell I go for it right there and hand it to my 235 lb RB.

They did try to go for it. A stupid delay of game penalty forced them to punt.

They were trying to force them off-sides.  They had no intention of going for it right there.

Bad decision. They only needed one yard.

Never underestimate the level of cluelessness that any person can have, whoever that person might be.

I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

This is what I saw on the reply yesterday. Nobody seems to want to talk about it.     Lions were lucky!
