Scheduling tweaks for the Combine

#1

Per CBSSports.com:

<p style="margin-left:40px;">"...the schedule this year is slightly different than past years with the NFL Scouting Combine starting a day earlier, changing the skill position on-field workouts (quarterback, running back, wide receiver) to Saturday.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">With NFL Network airing live workouts during the day, the move is likely to accommodate more viewership on Saturday for those three key positions, as well as, more eyes on the defensive line workouts Sunday..."

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

One of the smartest things the NFL Network did was televise the combine. I know it is boring for some but there are tons of draft nerds like myself that tune in every year.

Combine is so overrated.

How is it overrated?

It puts a very large chunk of the draftable players on a level field and allows for interviews, medical checks and movement ability. How in the world is that overrated?!

Running 40 yards in a straight line on carpet while wearing a tank top and shorts is overrated.

I disagree and I think that your opinion is based on poor information.

As I stated before, and to you I believe, the Combine puts everyone on a level playing field and has them all do the same thing. These drills can then be used as a cross-check device with game film where you can watch to see if the drill coincides with game performance. If questions do arise, then what is the source? In the case of the 40 Yard Sprint, did the player have a very good get off? What were his splits? Was his long speed better than his short speed?

The Sprint is a valuable tool that shouldn't be discounted simply because you don't think it applies. The greatness of Jerry Rice can even be partially explained via his 40 time in that his long speed - the time from the 20 yard point to the 40 yard point I believe - was almost World Class if I am remembering the story correctly.

Maybe you should try to have an open mind and not be such a naysayer.

My thinking was along the lines of actual numbers being inaccurate because they are not wearing full uniforms or running on the artificial turf. Although everything you mentioned is important, all we hear and read about is the total time it took to run 40 yards, which is actually the least important part of the drill.

I dont the combine is overrated.  It just needs to be rated properly.  Don't use it as a tool to inflate the prospects of bad football players.  Instead use it to validate good players you see on tape.  And to differentiate between similar prospects.  And to discover lesser known prospects.

Might be overrated by the media, but I doubt most scouting guys overrate the process.

That's what I mean, overrated by the media.

I also feel that a lot of people out there don't really understand the process nor the time frame for how prospects get evaluated.

As I understand it, a scout watches the player and works up their game film. After that, typically the position coach of interest will then evaluate the player after  the season's work is done. As of right now, most every team's "draft board" out there is not only incomplete, you can probably say that it hasn't even really started yet. In the months before the Combine, the players are reevaluated again and expectations are laid out as to what their Combine performances will be. Once the Combine results are in, then a slightly more clear picture is developed.

We as fans take snapshots and passing glances at players and judge them, but teams are much more methodical as to their approach. At least, in my opinion.

I love watching the combine! I even like watching the back-peddle drills, swim moves, all that stuff. It's just interesting to me and the best part is Rich Eisen's 40.
