Just a reminder that the National Champion lost to a 7-6 ACC team

Quote:And FSU got beat by the team that lost to the team that lost to a 7-6 team by 39 pts. say that 4 times non stop.

Quote:This playoff showed why we need 8 teams. How many people said Ohio state was overrated? The number 4 seed (and many argued they shouldn't even be in the tournament) dominated the playoffs. It also shows how flawed the BCS was. Yea but you could say that about the NFL as well. You've had more teams seeded 4-6 win the Super Bowl than seeded 1-3 over the last 9 seasons. And just as many 6 seeds win it as 1 seeds... and thats with 1 seeds getting a bye! Using the argument above, we're probably leaving out all sorts of potential Super Bowl contenders by limiting the playoff field. One and done playoff formats don't determine who the best team is. They just dont. It's injuries and matchups and frankly some luck. There are probably 20 teams that could have won an 8 team playoff in college this year. Get the right matchup, play well at the right time, avoid the wrong injury, etc... ________________________________________________ Scouting well is all that matters. Draft philosophy is all fluff.
^^yea and I have seen plenty of lower seeded teams beat higher seeded teams in multi game playoff rounds in the NBA and NHL. All sporting matches are pretty much about the right match up, peaking at the right time and injuries, etc. etc.

I think all you can do is find the fairest system and to me, 8 teams would allow all conference champions from the big 5 and 3 at large bids. It would still make the regular season meaningful as getting or being conference champion is hugely important and would allow other deserving teams to get in. We are on our way to 8, just a matter of time.
^^ Agree probably will head to 8. If they do, I think the first round will be played on the campus of the highest seeded teams. You can't expect the fans of the teams to travel all over the country for three playoff games for those that make it to the final game.

Just like how most NCAA bball team isn't the best team. Playoff systems like this doesn't always crown the best team, but most years it brings excitement. This is what will happen in the NCAA. Contrast this to the NBA with their 7 game playoff rounds, which almost always guarantees that the best team wins the championship. Quote:But by your argument nothing can determine the best team. We are on our way to 8, just a matter of time. Well the only real way to determine the best team is to look over a large body of work. Because over time, injuries, matchups, statistical anomalies, etc... all balance themselves out. I've just heard a lot of people complaining today about Ohio St and I just think they are going to have to get used to this. I agree with them in the sense that all year long nobody thought of Ohio St as one of the best teams, let alone the best. They lost early to an average team at home, fell in the rankings, and then slowly worked their way up as those ahead of them faltered. But didnt always looks good doing it as they struggled against a few average to poor teams. I think the majority of people out there were assuming they'd lose along the way... just as they assumed that for FSU. But this is the new reality of college football... especially when they expand the playoff to 8 teams. Just like the NFL routinely has low seeded teams win it all, you will absolutely see some slightly above average 3 or 4 loss team win a bad division, get hot at the right time, win their conference title game and then make a run through the playoffs. For better or for worse, that will be the new reality of college football and folks who dont like it will just have to get used to it. ________________________________________________ Scouting well is all that matters. Quote:Well the only real way to determine the best team is to look over a large body of work. Because over time, injuries, matchups, statistical anomalies, etc... all balance themselves out. Disagree with first paragraph. You can make an argument for too many teams even using large body of work. There is way too many disagreements. Also, Ohio State played a 3rd string QB and dominated the playoffs. Hard to argue against them being the best out of those 4 teams. Every team struggled. Alabama struggled and lost to an ole miss team who was not as good as people thought. Easily could have lost to arkansas. Again, that is even a bigger argument for playoffs since there is more parity.
Had the playoff been held way back in September when Ohio State lost to Va Tech then they would have not been invited as at that time they were not very good. They had an inexperienced offensive line and a QB making his 2nd start. Good thing for the Buckeyes that they play the championship game in January. That Ohio State that played last night does not remotely resemble the one that lost to Virginia Tech. THAT is the beauty of the playoffs. You can start the season young and inexperienced, slip up, then come together and grow as a team and find yourself playing your best football at the end of the season.
In one of the many interviews with Urban Meyer I saw where he stated the Buckeyes became a team in the overtime win against Penn State. From there they just kept getting better and from what I saw in the past month, the best "team" indeed did win it all.
