What happens to Scelfo?

#21

I hope Olson is being brought in as some sort of assistant head coach or offensive assistant because I think Scelfo did do a good job as QB coach with Bortles. It was pretty apparent that Blake had gotten significantly better in his footwork and mechanics during the preseason and early in the season. Once he was forced into the starting lineup and had to focus on game planning instead of redshirting and working on his mechanics like our original plan, he began to regress. Though I guess if Olson is someone Gase really wants around it makes sense to have all the coaches on the same page.

Quote:Id believe he would be gone but they could find another smaller role if they liked him enough.

What role is smaller than coaching three players with the same job title?

John Oehser told J.P. Shadrick once Blake Bortles actually did not regress, but is riding a rollercoaster. Do you say a kid is regressing when she takes only five steps after taking 10 while learning how to walk?

Quote:That makes sense, but Gus Bradley said no more changes to his staff are coming later.
And President after President have said that they wouldn't raise taxes. What's your point?

Quote:Why would assistants sign contracts for only one year? I can see Adam Gase doing that because he was a head coach candidate until yesterday, but for quarterbacks coaches, it would not make any sense.
Two reasons:

1. It leaves them free to pursue a coordinator opening without the team being able to block the move.

2. If David Caldwell asks me if I'd like to make $250k next year, I'm saying yes.

Your Gase example makes no sense, actually. He can sign a fifty-year deal to be someone's coordinator, and that team can't block him from taking a head coaching job regardless. In his shoes, you'd almost want a longer contract so you've got a better shot at working with the same players a couple of years in a row, maximizing the chances of them looking good enough to get you an interview for a head job.

The team certainly can block a move from position coach to offensive coordinator. The Titans did it to Mike Mularkey twice. He is only a tight ends coach, so becoming the Buccaneers or Bears OC would not have been a lateral move.

Position coaches are only paid $250,000 annually? That's crazy when you look at player salaries.

I thought that job also involved coaching wide receivers and tight ends.

Speaking of Chad Henne, is he really a serviceable back up? I am not expecting much with backups, but I want a guy who won't stall the offense on every drive. We need a guy who we can trust to hand the ball off and successfully make his check down throw.

He's a veteran who knows the coaching staff well, and can hold his own for a short time if called off the bench. As backups go, that's about what you're looking for. If he's forced to start for an extended period of time, we're screwed, but most teams are screwed if the backup QB is out there long-term.

If there's a player out there who'll command less money and upgrade the position, sure, why not pursue him? I'm not sure that player's out there, though. I wouldn't call Henne a lock, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't back next year.

Chad Henne has one more year on his contract. I expect the Jaguars to look for someone else to back up Blake Bortles next year.

The bad news about the Olsen  hire is that Olsen was the QB coach for Blaine Gabbert.

Jim Harbaugh coached him too. Same Blaine. Some guys just don't have it.

Olson was only the QB coach in 2012. 2012 also happens to be by far Blaine Gabbert's best year statistically.

BG QB rating by year. 2011... 65

                                     2012... 77

                                    2013...  36

Now I'm wondering what happens to Butkus and/or Yarno. I can't really see Marrone wanting to be a O-Line coach for the next four to five years, so will Butkus be allowed to stay and "learn" under Marrone in order to eventually take over the spot?

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!
