Jags Hire Greg Olson as OC

Some people on here like to comment because the majority of people are upset with this hire, yet they have a damn good reason to be upset. They're tired of the losing culture, year after year after year.. Can you blame them for being upset with this hire?

When people have never disagreed with a move by the organization until said move was rectified, nor felt they had the freedom of forming their own opinion about a move before the move was successful or a failure, they are too far gone to reason with.

These are called "Yes men" in the business world and typically end up eating lunch by themselves in the break room.

Multiple 3-5 win seasons will do that to fans..

As for these "yes men", its the company line and the company can do no wrong..

Quote:Pro bowls mean nothing.... Marks wasn't a first team pro bowler. It's voted on by the fans and they usually end up taking the 7th ranked person anyway because people decline.

Remember the year Garrard was a pro bowler?

No one is celebrating Olson... HE HASN'T CALLED A PLAY YET FOR THE JAGS. Can you disagree with the signing? of course you can. But complaining already is absurd.

You're twisting it.  This isn't a discussion about the legitimacy of the Pro Bowl.  The point made was that Carr wasn't a top 10 quarterback, he just didn't suck as a rookie - which seems to be Olson's main selling point.

I'm not complaining about Greg Olson.  As a person, he seems knowledgeable and like a decent guy.  He's a wrestling coach, which makes me instantly like him.  I'm complaining about hiring him as an offensive coordinator.  The hire is what I'm complaining about.  When am I supposed to voice displeasure about a hire, except immediately after?  Am I supposed to wait until he gets fired to say I don't like the hire?

At this point it looks like a decent hire IMO.  Those wanting Gase can look at the interviews he's had and the fact that no one has signed him yet.

I think it is a terrible hire but we'll see what happens.

What I find hilarious is how every local media member is trying to make this positive. Are they not allowed to disagree with what the organization does? Does any other franchise get such little criticism from their local media?

They're certainly entitled to be as angry and upset as they want.

It doesn't make the hire better or worse based on their opinions.  Every situation is unique.  The guy they've hired has a track record that gives some indication he can get the most out of his QB.  Bulger had his best season under Olson.  Why?  Because he had talent to work with around his QB.  Let's see what he can do here with the young talent the Jaguars will have to utilize.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Quote:In the one season where he had talent (Rams) he had the 6th ranked offense in the league. A 4,000 yard passer, 1,500 yard rusher and 2 1,000 yards receivers. That was with Bulger.

He gets a young offense with loads of potential.

And now its rumored that Chicago is leaning towards hiring Charlie Weis over Gase on 1010xl.

Interesting tidbit:

Quote:It's also worth noting that Olson was the quarterbacks coach at Purdue while a guy named Drew Brees was under his tutelage, that saw Brees be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy two years in a row as well as winning the Maxwell Award in 2010. He was also the offensive coordinator for Jon Kitna at Central Washington.

So he has a decent track record at developing QBs... He'd make a great quarterbacks coach.

His track record as offensive coordinator - not so good.

At least we can say the Jags are better than the worst franchise in the league...the Browns!   :woot:

I'm not getting the idea that Olson's experience is a positive because he knows how to work with bad teams.

Are we admitting that we're not just young, as the party line seemed to indicate last season, but fundamentally bad? What party of OIson's complete inability to produce winning seasons for these bad teams indicate that he's good at working with them?

I also don't get the notion that Gase is a whiff because he had Manning to work with.

Are we admitting that Bortles is not a good QB, who just needed a year to 'mature', as the party line seemed to indicate last season? I thought the general consensus was that Fisch was a hindrance to Bortles, and we needed an OC who could let Blake be the franchise QB he was supposed to be. What part of Olson's complete inability to produce production out of Gabbert indicates that he's good at working with bad QBs?

Also, isn't it possible that the teams Olson's been associated with were bad, in part, because of Olson? People are looking at the Gabbert fiasco as something that has depressed Olson's stats. Couldn't we just as easily say that Olson was a major contributor to Gabbert's collapse from potential to the worst QB in the league?

All I know is, from my reaction to this news, I've realized that I don't think I can take another awful season. I really don't know how to take it if Oehser starts calling it the "5 year rebuild". I don't know what will happen if this rebuild fails.

I am enthused over the Marrone hiring.

Less than enthused over the Olson hiring.

As I offered yesterday, perhaps this was done out of deference to Bortles, who expressed a desire to continue to work with Scelfo.

At this point, we can only hope that

1)  Olson's past OC stints were marred by a lack of talent;

2)  The Jaguars actually have offensive talent and that it just needs to be developed.

3) Olson can provide a scheme in which that young talent can thrive.

But at least we have an experienced OC.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

How did Gabbert do in San Francisco?

His track record as an OC is directly impacted by the talent he had to work with.  You get that, right?  What talent did he have in Oakland?

Look at what he did with Bulger in St. Louis as their OC back in 2006.

I think jumping to any sort of judgment while the ink is still wet on the contract and not a play has been called in Jacksonville seems a little silly, but that's just me.  If he turns out to be a decent OC here in Jax because he's got the talent to work with, I'm sure everyone will continue to complain.

Sad when people are told they stink before they have a chance to show what they can do.  I know, his record wasn't that good with his previous team but it just may be that he didn't have a lot to work with.  Just a thought....let's wait and see before we complain.

I was thinking the same thing. If Fox doesn't want him back, it might be the only job he can get.

  1. I think it's safe to say that's the case with his previous stints.  Especially the past couple of years in Oakland.
  2. We've all seen what the guy will have to work with.  There's a lot of young talent on that side of the ball to work with, and they should add to that this off season.
  3. He managed to make Carr serviceable.
I think the jury is going to be out until the season starts and we get a good sense for how he'll utilize the talent he has to work with.  I'm not excited about the hire, but I do think it's going to be an upgrade over Fisch.  But, I also think the offense was going to be better in 2015 regardless of who the OC is because they were so young last season.

That's just crazy talk.  It's inappropriate to be patient.  Knee jerk reactions are always best.
