There should be a drawback to this. Like maybe a small monetary bonus to the coach if he is blocked from interviews?

 

How about not allowing teams to block interview requests if the job is a promotion? That would have helped Mike Mularkey.

I don't agree with organizations blocking coaches to interview with other teams for a better position, the Packers are notorious for this. Van Pelt is obviously a hot commodity so it wouldn't surprise me if GB promoted him to a more senior position next season.

Caldwell:  "Hi, this is Dave Caldwell, Jacksonville Jaguars.  We'd like to interview Alex Van Pelt for our vacant Offensive Coordinator position."

Green Bay GM: "Um, yeah, hold on a mintue."

Van Pelt:  (in the background whispering to GB GM) "No, no, no. Tell them I'm not here.  Tell them you are blocking them."

Green Bay GM:  "Dave, thanks for the inquiry, but we decline permission for you to interview him.  Good luck next season...snicker, snicker."

Caldwell: "But, but, but......"

He was likely being asked to interview for the coordinator job.  Not QB coach.  It would be career advancement.

I'd bet a lot of people from around the league would at least like the opportunity to interview for an OC position. Van Pelt probably doesn't have a lot left to teach Rodgers, and he may even want the opportunity to run an entire offense on his own.

If Alex Van Pelt would have become the Jaguars OC and the team went 8-8 or better in 2015 ( with Blake Bortles making a major jump forward in his development ),  Van Pelt likely would have received multiple HC interviews in 2016.
