I don't understand why we can't just watch and see how the guy calls plays for a few games before we start arguing whether he's worth a damn or not. Hindsight is 20/20, but y'all have foresight that's measuring around 20/875 at the moment.

I'm willing to give Olson a chance, as I've said many times since his hire.  He does have some upside, so there are things to be excited about.

 

The problem I sometimes notice, is even when the writing is on the wall, there is a knee-jerk reaction to defend the coach by some folks (which is one's right to do)...  

 

I think if Olson can develop BB5 and can create a scheme that best matches our talent at WR we'll be very happy with the hire.  I think Marrone fixing the O-Line and best using our RBs talent, we have a good chance of competing.

 

The thing which is always a huge contention are the discussion about when it's time to realize that a coach isn't doing his part...  We'll see what happens come September.  Hopefully we see drastic improvement, but I think we'll have a pretty good idea of what our offense is by Mid-October/Early November.

 

Untill then, if some folks have concerns about Olson, so be it.  It's not like they are pulling stuff out their rear ends.  Olson's record isn't pristine.  There's some good, a quite a bit of bad...  I'm hoping he's got enough experience and football knowledge to finally produce a championship caliber offense.  We have the talent at WR and RB (provided Gerhart and Shoelace are 100% healthy) to be a potent offense as long as the O-Line gets fixed.

We'll revisit this once there's actually something tangible to evaluate. I hope you're right and he's a terrible hire because it's clear that if he's not, and the team shows improvement, this is going to be devastating for you. Don't worry FreeAgent01, you can replace Olson's name with Gene Smith and Blaine Gabbert in the post above.  I read all the same stuff from this guy when those two were here.  Never a bad hire or draft pick for the Jags in the eyes of some people... until they SUCK all the life out of the fans with their SUCKNESS.... then it's all a tap dance and spin city to try to justify the unwise defense of said bad Jaguar decisions....."well at the time, it was a good decision, blah, blah, blah... This is actually a pretty sensible take.  People make pronouncements based on a perception and they haven't even acknowledged what the guy's history is.  I posted a message awhile ago along these lines.  The guy has a little bit of a mixed history but he has had successful seasons so it's not like it's outside of the realm of possibility for him to come here and be successful.  He's also thought of by people actually in the league to be a decent QB coach which is probably what Bortles needs most (second only to some improved pass protection).

I think another key part is getting some veteran talent through free agency for this offense. A receiver, tight end and right tackle would make a huge difference. I like the young talent but you have to have some experience too..

 

And from watching Caldwell's end of year presser, it was clear he views that as his number one mistake here.

I like the combo of olson and Morrone. The idea to me is you hope olson hasnt reached his ceiling as a coach and morrone can help bring him along before he leaves for greener pastors 2017. If it works out olson developes Bortles and co. And then leaves for a HC gig. Gus rinses and repeats while doing his thang on defense. No matter what its better on paper than fish.

Track record for an OC is almost meaningless, because it can pretty much be entirely summed up by "Who was his QB"?       Josh McDaniels was an up and coming offensive genius when he coached Tom Brady.  Then went to Denver and became an offensive dullard when he had to coach Kyle Orton and Tebow.   Then magically rediscovered his genius status   when he went back to New England and coached Brady again.   Just like Charlies Weis went from offensive genius to washed up has been just about the time he stopped coaching Tom Brady.    Funny how that works.     

 

A lot of teams have in essence co-coordinator duties between a "running game coordinator" and "passing game coordinator" in weekly gameplanning and preperation, and the passing game coordinator usually handles playcalling duties because it's the most complexity and involvement.    Sounds like the Jags will have a similar split in duties between Marrone and Olson.

So based on your OC track record logic, what does that say for Bortles?

One of my biggest issues with Fisch was his seemingly inability to put together an offense that would allow for the most success of the players.  Basically he couldn't put them in the best position to succeed.  He may have lacked talent and had young players but I think the talent on offense was better than the overall result.  

 

We'll see what type of coach Olson is but it sounds as if he's going to do more to build an offense around key talent (Bortles) strengths instead of forcing a square peg into a round hole.

I'm with you. I liked all the funky stuff Fisch would do (when it worked), but from what we've read, he was so concerned with confusing the defense with his looks, that he ended up over complicating the offense thus caused as much confusion on that side of the ball as well. If Gus is all about playing fast, this wasn't really working to make that happen.

Fisch didn't lack creativity regarding individual plays. He just really stunk at preparing the offense in general and he couldn't string together a series of good play calls most of the time.
