Deflate Gate - the report is in

This all reminds me of the "Pine Tar Incident". It was something that was technically against the rules, but everybody did it and nobody worried about it. That is until Billy Martin brought the rule to the Umpires' attention because that rule, in that situation, would help him win that game...

Now both teams will have to play with properly inflated footballs. I'm guessing both teams are practicing with them now.

Good analogy.

An interesting side, Billy Martin lived (and died) about a mile from me after he retired.

Not really though... here is from the 25 anniversary story on the pine tar bat incident...

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/24/sports....html?_r=0

“When the rule was originally made, it was actually for the protection of the hitter, because if the pine tar would get on the ball, then the pitcher could grip the ball better and snap off curves and stuff like that,” McClelland said. “So, really, it’s kind of funny how the rule was made for the protection of the hitter, but the penalty was on the hitter.”

Really what the Patriots did is more like all the junk balling Gaylord Perry did throughout his career.  So I will moniker Mr Brady..  Tom "Gaylord" Brady

One thing that could potentially give this - tiresome - topic some more life; excessive turnovers in the Superb Owl game.

Knowing ol' Pete, he's going to have his defenders chopping, punching, slashing at, and ripping at the football on every down. Now, that's not all that unusual a thing to do but you have to believe that the players are probably going to be doing so with a little more... shall we say... "fervor"?

All together now: "Fervor"

Now you combine that with the idea that the footballs in use are going to be under more security/scrutiny than the Hope Diamond and will be triple qualified to be legal to play...

Well what if New England develops a bad case of the fumblitis and the pigskin keeps on hitting the dirt? Now how much scrutiny is that going to throw on this subject? Will ESPN build a complete soundstage at the New England practice facility? Will Skip Bayless set up shop inside Gillette Stadium? Just how bad would it get?

There.

Now we can go back to deflated ball jokes.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

And if the opposite happens (Pats have few TOs, win big, balls are tested throughout the game and found ok) will this mess all go away? Or will it continue to be the tempest in the teapot it's been for two weeks?

Huh?  The NFL doesn't even know what the PSI of the 11 balls were.

They have no case, this isn't an issue, and the Pats aren't guilty of anything.

Lol, you can be about as sure of that as someone that thinks they cheated.

Everytime we get new news the news is that the NFL's case is deflating. Now they can't even say that the refs verified that the original 12 balls were properly inflated to begin with, they probably just gave them the squeeze test, hence the "You can't really feel a difference between 12.5 and 11.0 psi" nonsense coming out now.

LOL at how the mainstream media have all become DEFLATION DENIERS.  It's all explained away by SCIENCE!  No matter that science seems to have taken the day off on the Colts sideline.  And even if they cheated, big deal.  It's just a game.  Hey, look how handsome Tom Brady is.  Did you know he's married to a supermodel?  True.  He has a wonderful legacy and it's such a shame to ruin it.  So we look the other way and try not to puke if the Deflatriots win.

A quote directly from the article you posted:

Still, several loose ends ensure that the controversy is not close to finished. If the Colts’ footballs were properly inflated, as they reportedly were, it might indicate that they were handled differently or inflated more fully to start with. If it turns out that both sets of balls were inflated and handled similarly, the N.F.L. is back to the likelihood that there was tampering by the Patriots.

So the Pats go in at 12.5 or some other unknown number and drop to 11.3 or some other unknown number. The Clots go in at 13.8 or some other unknown number and end up at 12.7 or some other unknown number. The case is clearly not air tight.

Agreed if that's the case.  What I understand is that the pat's balls lost 2 lbs of pressure while the clots balls did not lose 2 lbs of pressure.  If that in fact is not the case, then the patriots are off the hook.

If, on the other hand, the pats balls did indeed lose 2 lbs of pressure while the clot balls did not...  Then, to me it's pretty clear the pats tampered with the balls.

It's pretty much that simple, from my perspective.

Just wanna put this here until someone makes a thread about the other cheating team but doesn't care because its not the pats.

Is this no longer an open and shut case for you?

Rapoport was just on NFL Network and stated that 1 ball was 2 PSI below, a few balls were 1 PSI below and the rest were "a tick below the limit" which I would interpret as within a couple of tenths of 12.5. What do you make of this?
