"Worst play call ever" explained by Seahawks

#41

Quote:He didn't throw as many passes as Brady.

He didn't throw as many picks as Brady.

Wilson actually attacked downfield.

As for the INT in question, it is a quick hitting play.  He can't hold the ball lest he gets a sack.

Had Kearse not dropped a perfectly thrown bomb down the left sideline, it probably never comes down to that play.

To say Wilson had a bad game is silly.
^^ This is lost on some.  Considering the talent at WR, he played excellent.  To me they had been running read option without a QB keep the whole game.  Would have been a good time to fake and sprint to the sideline.

Quote:And yet the stats for the year show that Lynch isn't a goal line runner and had 0% success from inside the 1 yard line the ENTIRE season.
But only 100% during the game they were in.

Quote:Congrats, the 4 isn't the one and the Pats were destroying him in short yardage all game long. It wasn't the given everyone makes it out to be.
Check that, it was the 3 yard line. Short yardage/goal line was in on that TD.

It's ok Trav, the Pats were just better.

There have been some bad play calls but in the biggest game of the season, you dont get fancy on em. Do what got you there.

It was second down, taking a shot on a quick hitting pass play isn't terrible.  Everyone in the world thought they were going to run it....it was bad luck, but thats the way it goes.  I'm sure their thinking was if we miss it on 2nd we still have two more shots at the end zone.

The play didnt work out, it happens.

I don't have an issue calling a pass in that instance, especially since everyone watching was expecting run. I have an issue with the pass play that was called though. IMO a corner fade to Matthews, who was hot at the time, would've been the better option.

Woulda been better to get under center and go play action then shotgun on the 1.

As long as you're throwing the ball to your hot 6'5 WR.

They had 26 seconds and a timeout. They needed a TD to win the game. We've seen the Seahawks in similar situations before, and their creativity in playcalling has won them those games. To have an elite running back and an elite running quarterback and not use either one in this situation was ridiculously overthinking it.

They could have:

- thrown a fade...if they're intention was as what they said (they didn't want to run into the teeth of the Pats goalline defense)

- Read option..and force NE to decide to defend inside against Lynch or Wilson to the outside.

- Boot leg...and force NE to defend against a Lynch run, a Wilson run, or a QB pass. You can instruct Wilson to throw the ball away as soon as he rolls if the look isn't there. Same effect as scenario 1 as far as not using too much time.

- just run it straight

Keep in mind that along with the Broncos, the Patriots are one of the kings when it comes to using these types of pick plays.

It should not be a surprise that their defense recognized the play immediately and made a play on the ball.

I am down with that, I just think PA is a must there if you are thinking pass. They're not a spread option team, so they weren't fooling a soul when they were in gun on the goal line. Patriots knew run wasn't coming.

it was the dumbest play call ive ever seen

even if it worked, it's an unnecessarily risky play

Right, so for the biggest play of the Super Bowl, you call a play that - if the D recognizes it - is doomed.  So the Seahawks were betting nobody on the Pats D could count to 3, since having 3 WRs on the field is what tipped the play.

Yeah, so that's a bad bet 1000 times out of 1000.

Quote:TC did the same thing in both AFC Championship games here.

in fact, he ran the same play both times and had the same result.
Yup.  Sometimes coaches think they should get cute with the play calling because they're the smartest guy in the room.  Even the best of them screw up occasionally.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
